Three more of the 22 umpires who lost their jobs during a failed mass resignation in 1999 were rehired. Paul Nauert, Bruce Dreckman and Sam Holbrook began working minor league games this week.

Kyle Rote, one of the most popular players in Giants history, has died at 73. Rote died at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore. He had emergency surgery a week ago and died from cardiopulmonary complications, his son, Kyle Rote Jr., said in a telephone interview.

Free-agent winger Theo Fleury signed a two-year deal with the Blackhawks.

The Blue Jackets agreed to a multiyear contract with free-agent center Andrew Cassles.
