The Seattle Mariners traded third baseman David Bell to San Francisco for infielder Desi Relaford and cash. The Mariners didn't have a place for Bell after acquiring third baseman Jeff Cirillo from Colorado in a trade last month. Bell, 29, hit .260 last year with 122 hits, 15 home runs and 64 RBIs.
Ted Williams was in serious condition Friday after being hospitalized with a high temperature, below-normal blood pressure and flu-like symptoms.
The 83-year-old Hall of Famer was taken from his home by ambulance Thursday to Shands Hospital at the University of Florida, about 50 miles away.
College
The Southeast Missouri State University gymnastics team (2-3, 0-2) will return to action today at Houck Field House when Centenary College and the University of Wisconsin-Oskosh visit at 1 p.m.
Louisville coach Rick Pitino spent Thursday night in a hospital undergoing a battery of tests for an undisclosed illness.
Pitino, 49, said Friday he felt sick during his team's 77-71 loss to Charlotte on Wednesday night.
Pitino said the tests revealed nothing seriously wrong. He said he would be back on the sidelines Saturday afternoon when the Cardinals host DePaul.
Hockey
Ken Hitchcock was fired by the Dallas Stars after six seasons and the team's only Stanley Cup championship. Assistant coach Rick Wilson will become interim coach.
Hitchcock, 50, led the Stars to two Stanley Cup finals appearances -- winning the title in 1999 -- and five straight division titles. The Stars are seventh in the Western Conference at 23-17-6-4.
