SE's Hatton garners OVC baseball honor

Southeast Missouri State University senior center fielder Vern Hatton has been named the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week for last week's games.

Hatton batted .545, with two home runs, six runs batted in and six runs scored as the Indians won all four of their games, including an upset of Oklahoma State and a three-game sweep of OVC rival Austin Peay.

Hatton, the Indians' leading hitter at .375, extended his hitting streak to 21 games during Tuesday's 5-4, 10-inning win against Saint Louis.

Also during Tuesday's contest, junior shortstop Zach Borowiak tied a school record with five hits.

Southeast issues awards at celebration

Southeast athletes were feted Wednesday night as the school held its annual Booster Club All Sports Year-End Celebration at the Show Me Center.

Awards were presented for each of the men's and women's sports at Southeast.

The two top individual honors were the Jewell and Trombetta awards, given each year to the senior male and female athlete with the highest grade-point average for their career.

Cross country runner Dan Copeland won the Jewell Award with a 3.92 GPA in secondary education.

Cross country and track athlete Jessie Thompson captured the Trombetta Award with a 3.91 GPA in elementary education.

Football player Chuck McElroy and cross country/track athlete Amy Arteme were recognized as NCAA Foundation Leadership recipient and NCAA Woman of the Year nominee, respectively.

New Jersey Nets guard Jason Kidd became the franchise's first All-NBA selection Wednesday, joining first-time members Kobe Bryant and Tracy McGrady.

Shaquille O'Neal and Tim Duncan tied as the top vote-getters on the All-NBA first team, chosen by 126 sports writers and broadcasters in the United States and Canada.

Charlotte Hornets center Jamaal Magloire was suspended for one game without pay and fined $7,500 by the NBA for a flagrant foul against Orlando's Tracy McGrady.

Magloire will miss Game 1 of the Hornets' second-round series against either New Jersey or Indiana.

Fox has a new No. 1 NFL announcing team.

Former players Troy Aikman and Cris Collinsworth will join lead baseball announcer Joe Buck next season on the network's top games, a TV industry source said Wednesday on condition of anonymity.-- From staff, wire reports
