Basketball

Bulls forward Eddie Robinson, who has missed all but three games this year with a sore left big toe, was activated.

The Bulls also placed guard A.J. Guyton on the injured list with bursitis in his left elbow.

Signed as a free agent in August, Robinson averaged 11.8 points and 4.5 rebounds in eight preseason games. But he missed the first four games because of his sore toe.

He made his season debut Nov. 10 -- also against the Hornets -- and scored 17 points, had six rebounds and a career-high four steals in 37 minutes. He played two more games, averaging 13.7 points and 5.3 rebounds, before going on the injured list.

Guyton is averaging 4.4 points and 1.2 assists in 15 games this year. He scored a season-high 14 points in 16 minutes Dec. 1 against Philadelphia.

Hockey

Sabres captain Stu Barnes agreed to a three-year contract extension that will keep him from becoming an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season.

The $8.4 million deal makes Barnes the third-highest paid player on the team. The extension, nearly $2.8 million per year, is a hefty raise for Barnes, who makes a $1.6 million base salary this season.

Running

The Chicago Marathon set for Oct. 13 has established a $500,000 prize for this year's race, officials announced.

The prize money is a record amount for the marathon, executive race director Carey Pinkowski said in a written statement. Male and female winners of the race each will receive $100,000, which she said was a record for first-place finishers.

Baseball

Right-handed starter Terry Adams and the Phillies agreed to a $2.7 million, one-year contract that could become worth up to $19.5 million over three seasons.

Adams, the first significant addition for Philadelphia this offseason, was 12-8 with a 4.33 earned run average in a career-high 166 1-3 innings with the Los Angeles Dodgers last season. He made 22 starts after moving from the bullpen to the rotation, but ended the year with what was described as a tired elbow.

College

NCAA president Cedric Dempsey will retire when his contract runs out at the end of the year, saying, "It's time to move on."

Dempsey, who will be 70 in April, took over as the NCAA's third executive director in 1994.

At Columbia, Natalie Bright scored 21 points and Kerensa Barr added 13 as Missouri defeated Nebraska 67-41.

Missouri (12-3, 3-1 Big 12) went on an early 13-0 run to take control. Barr, who entered the game leading the nation in free-throw percentage at 93.6 percent, hit her only two free throws and three of her six 3-point shots against Nebraska (11-7, 1-4).

Golf

Casey Martin had surgery to remove potentially deadly bacteria from his withered right leg. He will be hospitalized for about another week, then will need 6-to-10 weeks of rehabilitation, according to his Minneapolis-based agent.
