Baseball

n The Arizona Diamondbacks traded 12-time All-Star second baseman Roberto Alomar to the Chicago White Sox on Thursday for a player to be named and cash. Alomar, 36, batted .309 with three home runs and 16 RBIs in 39 games for the Diamondbacks this season. He missed 56 games with a broken right hand after being hit by a pitch in Milwaukee on April 20. Alomar joined the Diamondbacks in the offseason after the White Sox chose not to offer him arbitration and left him a free agent.

Basketball

Peja Stojakovic wants out of Sacramento. Stojakovic said Thursday he told Kings president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie he wants to be traded from the only NBA team he has played for. Stojakovic, the NBA's second-leading scorer last season with 24.2 points per game, has been with the Kings since entering the league in 1998. He was upset that the Kings lost countryman Vlade Divac to the Los Angeles Lakers as a free agent and feels it's time to move on.

The Chicago Bulls signed point guard Jamal Crawford and then sent him to the New York Knicks as part of a six-player deal, ending weeks of negotiations. The Bulls also sent forward Jerome Williams to the Knicks in exchange for former Illinois standout Frank Williams, center Dikembe Mutombo, forward Othella Harrington and center Cezary Trybanski. Though Crawford led the Bulls with 17.3 points a game last year and was a restricted free agent, Chicago was willing to let him go in exchange for payroll flexibility.

Shaquille O'Neal has offered about $20 million for a mansion on Miami Beach's exclusive Star Island, the Miami Herald reported Thursday. The 7-foot-1 All-Star center was traded to the Heat last month after eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers and would be comfortable in this home -- it has 8-foot doorways. The 20,000-square-foot mansion was previously owned by retired Heat center Rony Seikaly, who sold it in 1997.

College

Georgia's men's basketball team was placed on four years' probation Thursday for rules violations under former coach Jim Harrick involving academic fraud, unethical conduct and improper benefits. The NCAA decided not to impose a one-year postseason ban on the basketball team, citing the school's self-imposed penalties that banned the team from the 2003 SEC and NCAA tournaments. The school's athletic department is on notice for the next five years. A violation by any Georgia athletic program before April 2009 could result in stiffer penalties. Georgia athletic director Damon Evans said the school plans to appeal.

Eastern Kentucky coach Travis Ford has received a multiyear extension on his contract, Athletics Director John Shafer said Thursday. Terms of the extension were not disclosed. When he took the job in April 2000, Ford signed a four-year contract that included a base salary of $80,000 a year. After his first season with the Colonels, the university gave Ford a new four-year contract, which would have extended the original agreement through the end of the 2004-05 season. In four seasons, Ford is 39-71 at Eastern Kentucky, but the Colonels are coming off a 14-15 season -- the team's highest win total since finishing 15-12 in 1992-93 -- and have made the Ohio Valley Conference tournament for two straight years.

Hockey

The St. Louis Blues on Thursday said they have re-signed center Petr Cajanek. Terms were not disclosed. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Cajanek, 28, last season had a 12 goals in 70 games -- both career highs.

Tennis

Carlos Moya moved into the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Masters with another three-set victory, beating Wayne Arthurs 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-6 (5) Thursday. Moya has been pressed to three sets in all three matches at the $2.5 million event. Fourteenth-seeded Marat Safin also was extended to three sets and two tiebreakers before beating Ivo Karlovic 7-6 (4), 6-7 (3), 6-4. In other matches, Tommy Robredo beat Greg Rusedski 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2), and Andy Roddick handled Paradorn Srichaphan 6-2, 6-3.

n Amelie Mauresmo withstood a tough challenge but advanced Thursday with Anastasia Myskina and Jennifer Capriati to the quarterfinals of $1.325 million Rogers Cup. Second-seeded Mauresmo defeated 14th-seeded Elena Bovina 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. Mauresmo advanced to a match today with No. 12 Karolina Sprem, who upset seventh-seeded Ai Sugiyama 6-3, 6-4. French Open champion Myskina made short work of No. 15 Chanda Rubin, winning 6-4, 6-0. Third-seeded Myskina will oppose Magdalena Maleeva, a 6-4, 6-3 winner over No. 9 Paola Suarez. Fifth-seeded Capriati ousted Mary Pierce 6-2, 6-4.
