Baseball

• The Chicago White Sox acquired right-handed reliever Mike MacDougal from the Kansas City Royals on Monday for minor league pitchers Tyler Lumsden and Daniel Cortes.

An All-Star in 2003, MacDougal was activated from the disabled list on July 13 after straining his right shoulder during spring training. He is 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a save in four appearances.

The 29-year-old MacDougal was 21-for-25 in save situations last season.

Lumsden was 9-4 with a 2.69 ERA in 20 starts for Double-A Birmingham. Cortes was 3-9 with a 4.01 ERA and 96 strikeouts in 20 games (19 starts) with Single-A Kannapolis.

* The Chicago Cubs put slugger Derek Lee on the 15-day disabled list Monday because of continued problems with his right wrist, which he injured earlier this season in a collision that forced him to miss nearly 60 games.

Lee, 30, broke his wrist when he collided with the Dodgers' Rafael Furcal on April 19. Lee missed the next 59 games while recovering from the injury and returned to the Cubs' lineup on June 25.

He returned to the disabled list Monday with post-traumatic inflammation, the Cubs said.

The Cubs started the season this year 9-5 with Lee in the lineup but went 19-40 in his absence. In the 20 games since his return, Lee hit four doubles, a home run and four RBIs.

College

• Slippery Rock University must reinstate two women's sports it cut for budget reasons because the school is not complying with a federal law requiring equal opportunities for female athletes, a federal judge ruled.

The university in January announced it was cutting eight sports to save $350,000 -- including women's field hockey, water polo and swimming -- as part of an effort to erase a $2 million budget shortfall. The school later decided to keep field hockey, but members of the women's swimming and water polo teams challenged the cuts in a federal lawsuit.

U.S. District Judge Donetta Ambrose found university president Robert Smith was wrong not to consider compliance with Title IX, a law requiring schools that receive federal money to provide equal sports opportunities for men and women.

"Knowing that SRU was not compliant with Title IX, Smith nevertheless decided not to consider Title IX compliance in determining which teams to eliminate," Ambrose ruled.

Football

• Ricky Williams had successful surgery on his broken left forearm, but there is no timetable for his return to the CFL's Toronto Argonauts.

Williams was hurt Saturday night in the first half of the Argonauts' 26-23 win over Saskatchewan when he used his hand to break his fall on the turf at Mosaic Stadium in Regina.

The running back underwent surgery for an hour on Sunday, and the team said Monday that the operation was "by all accounts successful."

Williams is expected to miss at least four to six weeks of the CFL season. Argonauts coach Michael (Pinball) Clemons will provide a possible return date for Williams early next week, the team said.

He is playing in the CFL because he was suspended by the NFL for one year after a fourth positive drug test. Williams is still under contract with the Miami Dolphins.
