Teams recognized for academic achievements

The Missouri State High School Activities Association listed recipients of fall and winter Scholastic Achievement Awards in its March-April edition of the Journal.

Jackson, Leopold and Zalma high schools had teams recognized on the Outstanding Scholastic Achievement lists for collective grade point averages of 3.25 or better.

Teams on the Outstanding list were: Jackson varsity softball, 3.60; Jackson varsity volleyball, 3.75; Jackson girls tennis, 3.59; Leopold varsity volleyball, 3.87; Leopold junior varsity volleyball, 3.75; Leopold Junior High eighth-grade boys basketball, 3.43; Zalma varsity volleyball, 3.74; and Zalma junior varsity volleyball, 3.29.

Jackson boys varsity soccer made the Distinguished Scholastic Achievement list with a GPA of 3.14. Teams above 3.0 make that list.

McKinney, Barrows win at Cape Country Club

Vicki McKinney was the medalist in Ladies Day competition Thursday at Cape Girardeau Country Club.

She posted the top score over 18 holes. Jean Mabrey was second and Catharine Weed was third.

Sharon Barrows had the top score in nine-hole competition, with Iris Ford finishing second.

Long took medalist honors at Kimbeland

Vicki Long earned the medalist honor at the Ladies Golf Association's weekly event Thursday at Kimbeland Country Club.

Play of the day was "Low Score Tee to Green." Harriet Drusch won championship flight; Dixie Jones claimed A flight; and Sandy Hess placed first in B flight.

Softball Web site has tourney info

Robert Haynes wants to see softball grow in popularity in Southeast Missouri. To that end, he has launched a Web site for the softball community, www.leaguelineup.com/semo11. The site includes a listing of upcoming tournaments, a poll and message boards.
