  • Washington reliever Felix Rodriguez was suspended for three games and Nationals manager Frank Robinson for one for their roles in last week's game against the New York Mets in which five batters were hit by pitches.

Rodriguez and Robinson were both ejected at Shea Stadium last Thursday after the reliever hit Paul Lo Duca with a pitch in the eighth inning. Rodriguez and Robinson also were fined, as was outfielder Jose Guillen.

n Boston Red Sox center fielder Coco Crisp has a fracture on the base of his index finger on his left hand and will be sidelined for at least 10 days. No surgery is needed to treat the injury, sustained when he tied to steal third base Saturday in Boston's 2-1 victory at the Baltimore Orioles.

* David Ortiz agreed to a $52 million, four-year contract extension with the Boston Red Sox on Monday rather than explore the free-agent market next year.

The designated hitter was in the last year of a $12.5 million, two-year extension.

Since Ortiz joined the Red Sox in 2003 as a free agent from the Minnesota Twins, he and Manny Ramirez have developed into perhaps baseball's top power duo. Ortiz led the AL with 148 RBIs last year.

  • Mark Turgeon, who led Wichita State last month to the NCAA tournament's Sweet 16, has agreed to a long-term contract extension, ending speculation that he will leave for a job at a larger school.

Terms of the contract, which runs through 2016, were not immediately available. A contract extension he received a year ago, which ran through 2010, increased his compensation to $460,000 annually.

Turgeon became a hot commodity among programs looking for a coach after he turned around a decade worth of losing in his six years at Wichita State. The Shockers (26-9) upset Tennessee 80-73 to make it to the regional semifinals, but lost 63-55 to George Mason, which made it to the Final Four.

* Texas sophomore forward LaMarcus Aldridge said Monday night he intends to enter the NBA draft, where he's expected to be among the top picks. The 6-foot-10 Aldridge averaged 15 points and 9.2 rebounds for the Longhorns (30-7)

* Fran Dunphy took over for Hall of Fame coach John Chaney at Temple on Monday, moving a few miles across town after guiding Penn to nine NCAA tournament appearances.
