Saturday's fifth annual Southeast Missouri State Walk for Women's Athletics will shoot for another record performance.

Last year's walk raised a record $32,450, bringing the total for four years to nearly $100,000. All proceeds benefit the university's athletic scholarship fund.

Walk for Women's Athletics was started by Cindy Gannon, Southeast's interim director of athletics who has served the university in a variety of roles over the years.

Gannon wanted to provide an outlet that would raise awareness of Southeast's women's athletic program while also raising money for the athletic scholarship fund to benefit both female and male athletes.

It looks like Gannon has succeeded in a big way.

Money has been pledged over the past year, and Walk for Women's Athletics will culminate with a 30-minute walk through campus beginning and ending at Houck Field House.

Saturday's walk will begin around 10 a.m. There will be refreshments and presentations that include door prizes and special prizes after the walk.

Several hundred people have participated in each of the first four walks, and another large turnout is expected.

Athletes and coaches from all Southeast sports, as well as administrators, will be on hand.

It was another rough Ohio Valley Conference weekend for the Southeast baseball team. The Redhawks lost two of three at Morehead State, but several individuals continued their impressive seasons

Topping the list are senior standouts Kenton Parmley and Trenton Moses, who keep adding to their amazing streaks.

Parmley broke the OVC hitting-streak record of 42 games that had stood since 1996.

Parmley's mark is now at 44, the fifth-longest hitting streak in NCAA Division I history. He has also reached base safely in 53 consecutive games.

Moses extended his school record for reaching base safely to 57 consecutive games. It's a shame that neither the OVC nor NCAA keeps records for that category.

Sophomore Derek Gibson also has a 21-game hitting streak.

While the Redhawks are struggling on the baseball field, Southeast's 2002 team certainly did not.

That 2002 group will have a reunion this weekend when the Redhawks host Tennessee Tech in a three-game OVC series.

The 2002 squad will be introduced during Friday's 6 p.m. series opener. The game will mark Southeast's second of four tailgates this season that feature free food and beverages.

Southeast's 2002 club won the program's most recent OVC regular-season and tournament titles. The then-Indians went 37-20 to tie a school record for wins and upset host Alabama for the program's first and only NCAA Division I regional victory.

A memorial gathering for Michael Schuette will be held at 6 p.m. today at VFW Post 3838 in Cape Girardeau. Anybody whose life Schuette touched is welcome to attend.

Schuette was a three-sport standout at Central High School in the mid-1960s and later served in Vietnam. He died April 6 at the age of 63.
