BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Southeast Missouri State University's women's soccer team suffered another heartbreaking loss Friday night in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.
The fifth-seeded Otahkians saw their season end in the semifinals as host and top-seeded Samford prevailed on penalty kicks.
The teams played to a 0-0 tie through 90 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of sudden-death overtime. Samford's Shay Helmbock netted the game-winning shot on the fourth penalty kick for Samford in front of a record crowd of 1,038.
Southeast (10-6-4) lost in the last two OVC Tournament finals to Eastern Illinois, by one goal and on penalty kicks.
Samford (12-4-3) will play second-seeded Eastern Illinois in Sunday's finals. The Panthers (11-5-4) beat Jacksonville State (11-5-4) 1-0 in Friday's other semifinal.
