Southeast roundup: Tennis team eliminated from postseason play

The Southeast tennis team's chances of making the Ohio Valley Conference tournament came to an end with a 6-1 loss to Murray State on Saturday at the Redhawks Tennis Complex.

Melissa Martin was the only Redhawk to secure a point when she defeated Erin Patton 6-2, 7-5 in No. 6 singles.

Martin's win was her sixth consecutive in singles competition.

Valeriia Kashina, Valeriia Nagovitcina, Ekaterina Donetckova and Annisa Warasanti each lost their singles matches in straight sets.

Martin and Nagovitcina lost 8-1 in the No. 2 doubles match while Warasanti and Katy Brady lost 8-0 in No. 3 doubles.

Southeast lost 5-2 on Friday against Division II opponent Northeastern State.

Nagovitcina won the No. 1 singles match 6-2, 6-4 and Martin picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win at the No. 5 spot.

Southeast fell to 9-12 overall and 3-6 in the OVC with the two losses this weekend.

The Redhawks face Austin Peay in their season finale at noon today in Cape Girardeau.

Softball

Southeast softball's losing streak was extended to seven games after the team dropped both games in a doubleheader against OVC West Division leader SIU Edwardsville on Saturday in Edwardsville, Ill.

The Redhawks didn't get a hit in a 10-0 loss in Game 1 and dropped a 9-2 decision in Game 2.

SIUE starting pitcher Haley Chambers had a perfect game going through 4 1/3 innings of Game 1 before third baseman Haylee Krack reached base on a passed ball after a strikeout.

Other than that it was all Cougars on the basepaths.

SIUE scored once in the first inning and took a 5-0 lead in the second after a three-run home run by right fielder Brittany Toney and second baseman Allison Smiley's RBI single.

First baseman Kayla Riggs hit a two-run shot to left center in the third to make it 7-0.

The Cougars added three more in the fourth to defeat the Redhawks in five innings.

Hannah Durham (2-9) took the loss in the circle for Southeast after allowing eight earned runs. The Cougars had 10 hits against Durham in four innings.

She walked four batters and hit two with pitches.

Chambers (11-11) struck out 11 batters in the win.

Southeast jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning of the second game but couldn't hold off the Cougars' comeback.

Designated hitter Lindsey Patterson led off the inning with a single and advanced to second when Krack bunted and reached on an error by third baseman Alex McDavid.

Catcher Chelsea Smith sacrificed them to second and third. Patterson scored on an error by the catcher and Krack plated the second run on a base hit by Nicole Deering.

The Cougars tied it in the home half of the inning on a two-RBI double by shortstop Chelsea Yankolovich.

SIUE took a two-run advantage in the third on a two-run homer by center fielder Whitney Lanphier.

Yankolovich came up with an RBI bunt in the fourth and Lanphier drove in three more runs with a double to make it 8-2 and later scored on a single for the final run.

Keaira Schilling (2-10) suffered the loss after allowing nine earned runs on 10 hits in six innings of work. She walked three, hit one batter and struck out two.

Erin Greenwalt (8-7) got the win for the Cougars. She pitched six innings and allowed an earned run on six hits. She had four strikeouts.

The Redhawks (7-23, 2-10 OVC) and Cougars (18-18, 10-3 OVC) face off in the series finale at 1 p.m. today in Edwardsville, Ill.

Track and field

The Southeast track and field team only had one event winner at the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn., over the weekend but other Redhawks finished near the top.

Mike Peters won the 400-meter hurdles in 53.55 seconds on Friday.

Blake Smith took third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.42 seconds.

Shon Kyle's toss of 173 feet, 11 inches in the discus was good for second place.

Reggie Smith finished second in the triple jump with a distance of 51-1 1/2 and Chris Martin was close behind in third with a jump of 50-10.

Reggie Smith also picked up a second-place finish in the high jump (6-10 3/4) on Saturday.

Courtney Gapelu finished third in the shot put with a throw of 50-7 1/4 while Bethany Pfeiffer's throw of 154-3 in the javelin was also good for third.

The Redhawks will be back in action at the War Eagle Invitational at Auburn University on Friday and Saturday.
