Southeast roundup: Redhawks soccer shuts out Jacksonville State for Ohio Valley Conference win

The Southeast Missouri State soccer team posted its first Ohio Valley Conference win of the season Friday night, blanking visiting Jacksonville State 1-0.

Southeast improved to 6-5-2 overall and 1-1-2 in OVC play. The Gamecocks fell to 6-9 and 0-5.

The Redhawks scored in the first eight minutes as junior Ashley Runion collected a pass from freshman Ali Bauer at the top of the box and blasted the ball into the lower right corner.

It was Runion's fourth goal of the season, tying her for the team lead with freshman Bobbi Jo Schlick from Jackson. Runion leads Southeast with 11 points.

Bauer has three assists, tied for most on the squad.

Jacksonville State outshot Southeast 14-9, but freshman keeper Kristen Starkey had to make just one save in her fifth shutout of the season. She lowered her goals-against average to 0.92.

The Redhawks play their final home game today when Tennessee Tech visits at 2 p.m. Southeast seniors Stephanie Kulavic and Lauren Lacopo will be honored before the game.

Volleyball

The Southeast volleyball team rolled past visiting Eastern Illinois 25-18, 25-18, 25-19 on Friday night.

Southeast improved to 8-12 overall and 4-6 in the OVC with its second straight win. EIU fell to 7-16 and 1-10.

Emily Hughes led the Redhawks in kills with 13. Karleigh DeLong had 11.

Kelly Benacka recorded a double-double with 43 assists and 10 digs.

Molly Davis led the way in digs with 16, followed by Claire Keaton with 13 and Amanda Rickhoff with 11.

Southeast concludes a five-match homestand Tuesday night against nonconference opponent Southern Illinois.

Cross country

The Southeast men took fourth place at the University of Evansville meet Saturday.

Jason Lumpkin led the way with a second-place finish in the 8-kilometer race. The junior crossed the line in 25 minutes, 36.12 seconds. Teammate Chris Loseman was right behind in third place (26:17.85).

Freshman Tyler Mullen also cracked the top 20, placing 18th in 27:08.52. Joel Krause (33rd, 27:35.66) and Cody Martin (46th, 27:50.72) rounded out the scoring for the Redhawks.

The Southeast women also placed fourth behind the third-place finish of Monica Noble. The junior covered the 5-kilometer course in 18:57.05.

Szandra Pal also cracked the top 10, finishing sixth in 19:19.97.

Rounding out the scoring for the Redhawks were Liz Speicher (22nd, 20:14.05), Kasey Owens (25th, 20:19.54) and Linnea Woldtvedt (29th, 20:22.73).

The Redhawks return to action Oct. 31 at the OVC championships in Nashville, Tenn.
