Southeast Missourian State baseball player Parmley agrees to deal with Grizzlies

Kenton Parmley will get a chance to play professional baseball after all.

Parmley, who recently completed a standout Southeast Missouri State career, was not selected in last week's Major League Baseball amateur draft.

But the shortstop signed a contract Tuesday to play with the Gateway (Ill.) Grizzlies of the independent Frontier League.

Parmley, whose 47-game hitting streak tied for the third-longest in NCAA Division I history, broke several Southeast career records. He was the Ohio Valley Conference's fifth-leading hitter this year with a .363 average.

The Grizzlies, who are based in Sauget, Ill., have a strong Southeast connection in Phil Warren.

Warren, who is in his sixth season as the Grizzlies' manager, played at Southeast from 1997 through 2000.
