~ The Southeast first baseman blasted three HRs in an 11-1 win over the Skyhawks
The Southeast Missouri State baseball team continued to look right at home Sunday in road games in Ohio Valley Conference action.
The Redhawks pulled off their third consecutive OVC road sweep with an 11-1 pounding of Tennessee Martin on Sunday.
And if the Redhawks look at home with a perfect 9-0 road mark in OVC play, first baseman Matt Tellor was downright cozy in Skyhawk Stadium. The senior belted three home runs Sunday to help the first-place Redhawks improve to 10-2 in OVC play and 17-10 overall.
"Matt was in the zone today and he remained really consistent at the plate throughout the game," Southeast coach Steve Bieser said in a release. "He hit for strikes and never expanded his zone. Our goal lately is to be more aggressive at the plate and we are starting to do that."
It was the first time a Southeast player hit three home runs in a game since Tyrell Cummings accomplished the feat April 6, 2008, against Murray State.
Tellor also hit a home run in Friday's series opener and had two doubles in the series, finishing 8 for 13 with 11 RBIs. He leads the team with nine home runs and 33 RBIs.
Southeast, which won 13-0 on Friday and 9-3 on Saturday, outscored UTM 33-4 in the series.
Tellor provided solo blasts in the first and third innings off UTM starter Alex Martin (0-5) to help the Redhawks to a 2-1 lead. He upped the lead to 5-1 with a three-run shot with one out in the seventh inning on the first pitch thrown by right-handed reliever Stu Jones, who had just replaced Martin. Andy Lack and Cole Bieser were aboard on walks from Martin.
Southeast added two more runs in the inning on RBI doubles by Andy Lennington and Clayton Evans.
Southeast added three runs in the eighth, with Gibson and Lennington providing RBI doubles. A Brandon Boggetto triple and a sacrifice fly by Cole Bieser accounted for the Redhawks' final run in the ninth.
UTM (3-22, 2-10) struck for its lone run off Southeast starter Alex Winkelman (1-2) in the second inning. Winkelman allowed a double in the inning, one of two hits he gave up over six innings. He struck out three and walked two.
Alex Siddle and Greg Mosel provided three innings of hitless relief. Siddle pitched 1 2/3 innings, striking out two and walking two. Mosel walked one batter over the final 1 1/3 innings.
Southeast finished with 14 hits.
Gibson continued his hot hitting by going 3 for 5 for his third straight multi-hit game. Gibson was 7 for 14 in the series with four RBIs.
Lennington added two hits and two RBIs on Sunday. He had six RBIs in the series.
Southeast returns to action when it hosts Arkansas State at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The Red Wolves dealt Southeast an 8-3 loss Feb. 25 in Jonesboro, Ark.
