The Southeast Missouri State softball team routed host Tennessee State 10-0 on Sunday to notch its first Ohio Valley Conference series sweep in nearly two years.
Southeast, which won both ends of Saturday's doubleheader, last swept an OVC series May 3, 2009. That victim also was TSU.
The Redhawks improved to 17-21 overall and 11-7 in OVC play as they remained fourth in the 11-team league. Last-place TSU is 10-33 and 4-16.
Sunday's contest was stopped after five innings by the eight-run rule. The Redhawks scored all their runs in the first three innings, including five in the opening frame.
Junior Stefanie Barnes, making just her second start of the season, fired a three-hit shutout. She struck out two and did not issue a walk as she improved to 3-1
Southeast had 12 hits, led by sophomore Kaitlin Wallace. She went 3 for 3 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored. Wallace went 7 for 11 in the series.
Junior Renee Kertz completed a big weekend by going 2 for 2 with three RBIs. She went 8 for 9 in the series while recording five RBIs.
Senior NIcole Troncoso had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs.
Junior Evan Sallis went 2 for 2 with three runs scored. Sophomore Taylor Cowan added two RBIs.
The Southeast women's tennis team ended its season Sunday with a 5-2 loss at Eastern Illinois.
Southeast finished 2-14 overall and 1-7 in OVC play. EIU is 6-10 and 2-6.
The Redhawks won the top two singles matches Sunday. Sophomore No. 1 Nikole Novikova won 6-3, 0-6, 11-9 (super tie-breaker) and freshman No. 2 Elizabeth Nyenwe prevailed 6-4, 6-2.
Nyenwe finished her rookie campaign with a 7-1 OVC record and a 9-7 overall mark, leading the squad in both categories.
