The Southeast Missouri State softball team closed play in the Cancer Awareness Tournament with a pair of losses Sunday in St. Louis.

The Redhawks dropped a 9-0 decision in six innings to UMKC, then were edged 4-3 by Saint Louis University.

The Redhawks went 1-3 in the weekend tournament and fell to 4-9 on the season.

Southeast managed just one hit in the loss to UMKC, which was provided by Riley Hayes with one out in the second inning.

UMKC scored single runs in the second and fourth innings before breaking loose for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Haley Thogmartin (2-5) took the loss for Southeast. She gave up nine runs and nine hits over 5 1/3 innings.

Winning pitcher Amber Grove struck out five and walked four.

The loss to Saint Louis came in walk-off fashion on a one-out single by Mackenzie Peter in the bottom of the seventh off Southeast reliever Mackenzie Hoelting (0-3).

The Redhawks scored single runs in the first, third and fourth innings to take a 3-1 lead, but SLU pulled even with two runs in the fifth.

Claire Wernig had an RBI double for Southeast in the first, while Haylee Krack and Sarah Messex had RBI singles in the third and fourth innings, respectively. Both Krack and Messex finished with two hits for the Redhawks, who were outhit 7-6.

Tennis team falls to Missouri State

Isabella Krupa won the only match for Southeast in a 6-1 loss to Missouri State in Springfield, Missouri.

Krupa defeated Anelisse Torrico Moreno 6-3, 6-1 in No. 2 singles.

Mariya Kostiuk (No. 1), Mila Majtan (No. 3), Viviana Ortiz (No. 4), Annisa Warasanti (No. 5) and Emilia Montenegro (No. 6) all lost their singles matches.

Krupa and Majtan won their doubles match 6-2, but the Bears took the doubles point by winning the other two matches.

Southeast (1-6) returns to action at 3 p.m. Thursday when it hosts Maryville University in its home opener.
