A look at news around the world of Southeast Missouri State athletics.

The Southeast Missouri State volleyball team opened Ohio Valley Conference play by splitting two road matches.

Southeast lost at first-year OVC member SIU-Edwardsville 25-22, 25-19, 25-15 on Saturday after Friday's 25-22, 25-22, 25-22 victory at Eastern Illinois.

Junior Karlee Lursen led the Redhawks (3-10) against Eastern Illinois with a season-high 15 kills along with 14 digs. Junior Brittney Kalinoski added 10 kills and 11 digs.

Senior Paige Dossey paced Southeast's defense with a career-high 19 digs. Junior Samantha Lowman had 13 digs.

Sophomore setter Julie Shives dished out 34 assists, and sophomore Emily Coon contributed four blocks.

"It was a great win for us," Southeast coach Julie Folliard said. "We played confident and this will help us gain some confidence and make some noise in the OVC this season."

Sophomore Colleen Yarber led Southeast against SIU-E with eight kills. Lowman had 12 digs and Shives recorded 27 assists.

Southeast plays its first home match of the season Tuesday when OVC opponent Murray State visits Houck Field House at 6:30 p.m.

Women's soccer

The Southeast women's soccer team dominated Saint Louis University statistically but was forced to settle for a scoreless tie Friday in St. Louis.

Southeast, which held an 18-7 advantage in shots, is 4-2-1. SLU is 2-4-1.

"I am very pleased with our possession in the game," Southeast coach Heather Nelson said. "We were smart in picking good positions on the field. St. Louis' goalkeeper played really well tonight.

"We created some good opportunities, but we need to be a bit more composed in the final third of the field. That will be one of our focuses going into conference play. Overall, I'm very happy with how the team is playing."

Southeast sophomore goalkeeper Ashton Aubuchon turned aside all three shots she faced in 110 minutes for her second solo shutout of the season.

SLU keeper Katie Walsh was credited with eight saves.

Southeast begins its OVC schedule Friday at Austin Peay.

Cross country

Southeast cross country teams turned in strong performances during Friday's SIU-Edwardsville Challenge. The women posted four top-10 finishes, while the men recorded three top-10 finishes.

Freshman Rebekah Lawson led the women, placing second in 19 minutes, 4.92 seconds over the 5-kilometer course.

Freshman Gloria Westlake was fourth (19:17.73), senior Jessica Bollinger fifth (19:22.99) and freshman Jenny Govero seventh (19:26.62).

The men were led by a sixth-place finish from junior Nate Shipley. He covered the 8-kilometer course in 26:24.97.

Junior Alex Zisser was ninth (26:32.92), sophomore Brent Collins 10th (26:35.85), freshman Craig Munie 11th (26:37.63) and junior Tyler Mullen 12th (26:41.76).

Southeast squads return to action Saturday at the Saluki Invitational in Carbondale, Ill.
