Southeast Missouri State roundup: Redhawks soccer team stays unbeaten in conference

The Southeast Missouri State women's soccer team dominated from start to finish, but it took a late goal to lift the Redhawks past visiting Eastern Illinois 1-0 on Friday night.

Freshman Erin Shulman scored with 8 minutes, 29 seconds left in regulation to help the Redhawks win the battle of teams that were tied for first place in the Ohio Valley Conference.

Southeast improved to 7-2-1 overall and 3-0 in OVC play, while EIU fell to 3-7-2 and 2-1.

"I was very pleased with our possession and attacking around the goal tonight," Southeast coach Heather Nelson said after the Redhawks outshot EIU 19-8. "Tonight went quite a bit like I expected. It was hard-fought the entire way, and their goalkeeper was very good. We showed a good deal of confidence and enthusiasm to go to the goal."

The Redhawks outshot the Panthers 12-4 while owning a 4-0 edge in corner kicks in the first half.

Nine of Southeast's 12 first-half shots were on goal, but EIU keeper Jessica Taldone turned away every chance. Taldone finished with 14 saves.

The game remained scoreless until the 82nd minute when sophomore Stephanie Palmer hustled to keep an errant cross from going out of bounds for a goal kick.

Palmer, after corralling the ball off the goal line, sent a cross into the middle to Shulman, who redirected it into the net for her ninth goal of the year. It was her fourth game-winning goal. Shulman leads the OVC in game-winning goals and is second in goals.

Southeast's defense kept nearly all of EIU's shot attempts to the outside. Sophomore keeper Ashton Aubuchon had to make just one save in her OVC-best fourth shutout of the season.

The Redhawks wrap up their two-game OVC homestand today when SIU-Edwardsville (3-4-1, 1-2) visits Houck Stadium for a 1 p.m. contest.

Volleyball

The Southeast volleyball team had its three-match winning streak snapped Friday at Tennessee-Martin.

Southeast's 14-25, 25-16, 25-23, 25-21 loss dropped the Redhawks to 6-11 overall and 4-2 in OVC play. They already have matched their conference victory total from last season.

Junior Brittney Kalinoski led Southeast with 10 kills. Senior Paige Dossey and junior Karlee Lursen put down nine kills apiece. Dossey had 15 digs, and Lursen added 11.

Junior Samantha Lowman paced the Redhawks' defense with 23 digs, which tied a career high.

Sophomore setter Julie Shives recorded 33 assists and a career-high 22 digs.

The Redhawks host Eastern Illinois at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Dig for Life

The Southeast athletic department and Saint Francis Medical Center again are teaming up in the Dig for Life campaign during October.

The annual campaign coincides with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Members of the Southeast volleyball team secure pledges per dig that are tallied through October home matches. The money raised goes to Saint Francis Medical Center for educating area women about breast cancer awareness, providing early detection opportunities and improving prevention efforts.

The "Pink Up" games to kick of the campaign will be today and Tuesday during the soccer and volleyball matches.
