~ The Redhawks lost their ninth consecutive game at Arkansas State
Kenton Parmley and Trenton Moses continued their monster streaks for the Southeast Missouri State baseball team Tuesday night.
But the Redhawks as a group continued to struggle.
Host Arkansas State took control with a six-run second inning that featured just two hits and posted a 10-5 win in Jonesboro, Ark.
Southeast, which fell to 7-19, has lost a school-record nine straight games. The previous mark of eight consecutive defeats was set in 1992.
The Redhawks have dropped 15 of their last 17 contests. ASU improved to 14-10.
Parmley had two hits to give him a 33-game hitting streak dating back to last year. The senior shortstop is just two behind former major-leaguer Kerry Robinson's school-record 35-game hitting streak that ranks among the longest in OVC history.
The 33-game hitting streak is the second-longest in the OVC over the past decade. The longest streak in OVC history is 42 games by Austin Peay's Chuck Abbott.
Parmley, who entered play batting .414, also has reached base safely in 42 straight games.
Moses also had two hits, including a three-run homer. He has reached base safely in 46 straight games dating back to last year, two shy of the school record, and has a current 17-game hitting streak.
Moses, an All-American senior third baseman, leads the nation with 12 home runs and he entered the week fourth nationally with a .466 batting average.
Parmley helped give the Redhawks a quick 1-0 lead Tuesday. He led off the game with a single and pulled off a rare steal of home after reaching third base with two outs.
The Red Wolves went ahead for good with their big second inning that included three walks and two hit batters. All five of those free passes came in to score.
ASU made the Redhawks pay for their generosity when Collin Massanelli delivered a two-run double and Anthony Hecht capped the uprising with a three-run double.
Southeast entered the week leading the nation in walks allowed, and the Redhawks were toward the bottom with a 7.38 ERA.
The Redhawks got an RBI single from redshirt freshman Andy Lennington in the third inning to make it 6-2.
Moses' three-run fourth-inning homer cut the deficit to 6-5, but Southeast did not score over the final five innings. The Redhawks managed just one hit over the final four frames.
ASU added three fifth-inning runs to go up 9-5 and rounded out the scoring in the sixth inning.
Southeast was outhit 11-10.
Lennington and senior Kody Campbell added two hits apiece for Southeast. Sophomore Derek Gibson extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
True freshman Cody Spanberger (0-1) took the loss after being knocked out during ASU's big second inning. He allowed six runs on just two hits over 1 2/3 innings. He walked five and hit two batters.
Junior college transfer Tony Zerrusen fired two scoreless and hitless innings.
True freshman Grant Davis, Southeast's fifth and final hurler of the night, worked a scoreless inning for the second straight game.
Southeast resumes OVC action Friday with the start of a three-game series at Eastern Illinois.
