A record 144 individuals were honored Wednesday during Southeast Missouri State University's annual Scholar Athlete Luncheon at the University Center. Those recognized have a 3.0 or higher cumulative grade point average. That total of 144, which represents 52 percent of the athletes at Southeast, surpasses the previous high of 136 in 2002. A record 144 individuals were honored Wednesday during Southeast Missouri State University's annual Scholar Athlete Luncheon at the University Center.

Those recognized have a 3.0 or higher cumulative grade point average. That total of 144, which represents 52 percent of the athletes at Southeast, surpasses the previous high of 136 in 2002. Also recognized were 20 members of Southeast's spirit groups (cheerleaders and Sundancers) and 12 student athletic trainers.

The men's cross country team had the highest cumulative GPA at 3.517, followed by the women's cross country team at 3.434.

A record 16 Southeast athletes have a perfect 4.0 averages: Jen Burke, Juanita Coleman, Kim Krieger, Missy Moody, Heather West, Kris Woolf and Quincy Ezealah (track/cross country); Matt Carter (baseball); Matt Boyack (football); Derek Winans (men's basketball); Jessica Aebi (women's basketball); Kay Ehlke and Becky Prendergast (tennis); and Molli Beard, Jen Cross and Jessi Wullner (soccer).

Also recognized Wednesday were Southeast's Ohio Valley Conference Medals of Honor winners for the 2002-03 school year. That award goes to the athlete with the highest GPA in a conference-sponsored sport.

Boyack, Burke, Cross, Ehlke, Krieger, Winans and Woolf all won Medals of Honor, along with Lauren Fabbro (soccer), Laura VanHoevelaak (track), Emily Wahlman (volleyball), Brian Whitehead (track/cross country) and Emily Zimmerman (track/cross country).

VanHoevelaak, now a graduate student at Southeast, was also honored as the 2002-03 Southeast NCAA Woman of the Year. Chad Sierman (track) and Carina Souza (women's basketball) were honored for being nominated for the OVC Scholar Athlete Award.Southeast Scholar Athletes
