COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Delta, despite a one-hitter by Rebecca Cook, dropped a 3-0 heartbreaker to Worth County in semifinal action of the Class 1A softball tournament Friday afternoon at the Rainbow Sports Complex.
The Lady Bobcats, reaching the final four in their first year of fall softball, saw their improbable run end on one shaky inning.
"We played well, but key mental mistakes in the fourth inning really hurt us," said Delta coach Anne Trieb, who saw her team fall to 8-14.
Cook had another fine outing, allowing just the one hit, but four walks, a hit batsman and a crucial error put the Lady Bobcats in a hole they weren't able to escape. Cook had four strikeouts.
With the game scoreless through three innings, Worth County (19-7) loaded the bases in its half of the fourth. Two walks, a fielder's choice and a hit batsman loaded the bases. An error by Delta third baseman Erin Cook on a grounder allowed Worth County to plate the first run of the game.
A second run came across when the next batter singled for the only Worth County hit of the contest. The final tally scored on another fielder's choice to make the score 3-0.
Rebecca Cook, Tiffany Johnson, Rebecca Below and Andrea Dohogne accounted for Delta's four hits.
Delta meets Silex (18-5) today in the third-place game.
North Shelby (26-2) and Worth County face off in the final.
