Soccerfest host joins Central in title game

Cape Girardeau rivals Notre Dame and Central will meet today in the championship game of Notre Dame Soccerfest.

Semifinal action Friday in the eight-team tournament saw Notre edge Jackson 1-0 and Central slip past Carbondale (Ill.) 3-2 in double overtime.

Notre Dame (2-0) received the game's only goal from Jonathan Market about 13 minutes into the second half as his cross was inadvertently deflected in by a Jackson defender. Brendan McMeel recorded the shutout.

Central (2-0) received two first-half goals from Heath Orr, with assists by Trey Wills and Jordan Duncan. Carbondale tied it with two second-half goals. The Tigers then won as Aaron Bornstein scored with less than two minutes left in the second overtime, off an assist from Wills.

In Friday's consolation semifinals, St. Pius beat Marion (Ill.) 3-0 and Poplar Bluff nipped Sikeston 3-2 in a sudden-death shootout.

Notre Dame and Central meet at 7 p.m. today for the title. Jackson plays Carbondale at 5 p.m. for third place, St. Pius faces Poplar Bluff at 5 p.m. for fifth place and Sikeston takes on Marion at 3 p.m. for seventh place.

FOOTBALL

Scott City 27, Malden 14

Jason Schenimann returned the game's opening kickoff about 75 yards for a touchdown and Scott City never looked back during a season-opening road victory.

Matt Schaefer ran for two touchdowns and Joe Bruner added a touchdown run for the Rams, who never trailed.

"It's a darn good win for us," Scott City coach Jackie Johnson said. "These kids went through turmoil, but they've stepped it up."

Johnson was referring to the situation at Scott City that saw him elevated from assistant to head coach just days before the start of practice after Jason Burkman abruptly resigned.

Grandview 15, Chaffee 6

Grandview had 210 yards on the ground and handed host Chaffee a season-opening loss.

Brandon Lawson had a 15-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Jacob Laubenghal had a 17-yard run for a touchdown in the second quarter. Laubenghal finished with 100 yards rushing on 13 carries.

Chaffee's only score came in the third quarter on an 8-yard pass from Jeff Daughtery to Nick Powderly.

Daughtery completed six of 14 passes for 85 yards. Powderly led the Red Devils in rushing with 38 yards on seven carries and in receiving with three catches for 28 yards.

Perryville at Herculaneum

Perryville will try again to open its season again today after its game was postponed Friday when a scheduling mixup left the teams without referees.

The game will be played at 7 p.m. today at Herculaneum.

VOLLEYBALL

Leopold 19-19, Bell City 11-13

Leopold (3-0) defeated Bell City in the finals of the Woodland Tournament and remained unbeaten.

Melissa Stroder led with seven kills and Amber Nenninger had four kills. Lori Vandermierden had four kills and five blocks. Tasha Thiele and Rachel Crader each had three kills while Thiele also had 10 digs. Wendy Vandeven added 13 assists.

Vandeven, Thiele, Vandermierden and Nenninger were all selected to the all-tournament team. Leopold also took home the sportsmanship trophy.

Advance 25-25, Oran 14-12

Advance (2-0) swept visiting Oran to remain undefeated.

Nicole Tropf led the Advance with seven kills. Leslie Rainey turned in seven service aces and eight assists. Alicia Broshuis also had eight assists and Dana Williams had two blocks.

Advance's junior varsity also moved to 2-0 winning 25-13, 25-21.
