The Twin Rivers girls basketball team has a new leader after a Michael Snider was named head coach of the squad on Thursday.
Snider, a 2013 graduate of TRHS, has spent the last few years as the Holcomb boys basketball head coach as well as the baseball coach for the last two seasons.
“Having the opportunity to be the head coach at my alma mater means the world to me,” he said. “I have a lot of pride for our community and can’t thank our administrators and Board of Education enough for allowing me to lead the program. I’m very excited for the challenge. Being back in the community where I grew up and know so well has always been in the back of my mind. I’m just ecstatic.”
Coming back to Twin Rivers wasn’t just returning to the place he graduated from. For Snider, it was truly coming home.
After growing up next to the high school and his parents working at the school for more than 20 years, Snider won’t need too much of an introduction in the Broseley community.
“I built up a lot of pride for everything our school and community has to offer. It’s always been in the back of my mind,” he said.
After coaching at Holcomb on the boys side since 2019, Snider said he learned a lot and intends to bring that to his new position.
“My time at Holcomb was fantastic,” he said. “The community, faculty/staff, and students accepted me immediately. We built some great relationships there and I’m forever grateful for that. Those kids are unbelievable and I’m forever indebted to them for my growth as a coach, teacher, and person. They’ll be what I miss the most.”
Snider said it wasn’t only about what happened on the court or field that made his time in Holcomb special, he said it was about the daily interactions with the students he came in contact with.
Snider knows how important it is to build a program from the ground up and that’s exactly what he intends to do.
“I’m looking forward to working on the program from elementary up to the high school. I’d love to keep expanding on the work that some great coaches before me were able to do. The program has had some great coaches at the helm for a long, long time. From Coach Walk, to Coach Westerfield, to Coach Crockett we have been very blessed. Work ethic is number one on my list. Both for me personally as a coach and for the program. I don’t want to be out-worked and I hope that is the backbone to our program.”
