Smith wins open 400 in nation's best time

Southeast Missouri State track and field star Miles Smith again has the nation's fastest time in the 400-meters after winning at Saturday's Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn.

Smith, a senior All-American, clocked 45.84 seconds to capture his specialty in the meet hosted by the University of Tennessee.

Smith timed 46.23 to win the SEmotion Relays the previous weekend, but two other runners turned in faster times to place him third in the nation.

Also for Southeast's men at the Sea Ray Relays, John Berry was fifth in the long jump (25 feet 1 1/4 inches) and Brandon Karcher placed ninth in the 10,000-meters (31:48.50).

On the women's side for Southeast, Samantha Espiricueta was fifth in the javelin (140-5) and Lindsey Hearne finished ninth (130-10).

Softball loses

The Southeast softball team suffered an Ohio Valley Conference series loss at Samford as the Redhawks dropped Sunday's finale 7-1.

Southeast is 19-21 overall and a fifth-place 8-9 in the 10-team OVC. Samford is 15-24 and 7-11. The squads split Saturday's doubleheader.

Elaine Fisher (14-14) allowed six runs and six hits in 4 2/3 innings as she took the loss. The Redhawks had just four hits.

Southeast has a 3 p.m. nonconference doubleheader Thursday at Saint Louis University. .
