SIKESTON — As the summer haze lifts and the pads crack, a renewed sense of purpose fills the air as the Sikeston football team prepares to embark on a journey of resurgence.
The Bulldogs have wasted no time in their pursuit of improvement, hitting the field with an unrelenting drive on the first day of official practice on Monday, August 7.
“It was a good day,” said Sikeston head coach Tresaton Pulley. “Just getting out here and getting some rust off was great.”
Throughout the summer, Sikeston engaged in rigorous activities, honing their skills and fostering a strong sense of camaraderie in preparation for the upcoming season. From grueling conditioning sessions under the scorching sun to team-building exercises and strategy sessions, the Bulldogs left no stone unturned in their quest to elevate their performance.
The team took part in a joint practice with Caruthersville, the Battle of the Bootheel 7-on-7 Tournament at Kennett, hosted a contact camp featuring East Prairie, Charleston and Kennett, and commenced summer workouts at the Marquette 7-on-7 Tournament.
“I was just good to compete,” Pulley said. “Getting them out here competing is about all you can ask for during summer break. Everyone’s trying to get better.”
Pulley pointed to several positive indicators, such as a slight increase in team numbers, which fosters healthy competition and depth. Moreover, the entire team has diligently invested time and effort in the weight room, resulting in noticeable gains in strength.
“That’s a big deal,” Pulley said. “I know we’ve gotten stronger. I can see it. Our numbers are pretty good but we could always use more depth, but right now we’re pretty solid.
“We just want to be able to run the football, stop the run on defense and be sound special teams,” he continued. “Hopefully, if we can do those things we can be better.”
Sikeston will host its annual Red and Black Scrimmage at 9 a.m. on Friday, August 11.
The exciting event serves as a showcase for the team’s progress and provides an opportunity for the fans and supporters to catch of glimpse of the Bulldogs in action before the official season begins.
Admission to the scrimmage is as simple as bringing a Gatorade, making it an accessible and enjoyable experience for all.
Following the scrimmage, there will be an informative meeting for parents, where they can connect with the coaching staff and receive essential information about the upcoming season.
The Bulldogs will travel to the Winfield Jamboree on Friday, August 18, and be on the road at Hillsboro for their regular season opener on Friday, August 25.
“We’re locked in and ready to hit the field,” Pulley concluded. “We’ll keep pushing forward, and never settle.”
