SIKESTON — The Sikeston wrestling teams hosted West Plains and Poplar Bluff for its senior night on Tuesday, Jan. 3.
Each squad finished the evening with a 1-1 mark in the final meet of the season at the Field House.
“We came out and competed well,” said Sikeston coach Blake Angle. “Coming off of winter break, you’re hoping to improve on some things. There were some things that we got better at, but there were some other things we need to spend a little bit more time on. That’s what we’re going to focus on while we bucket down over the next month to get ready for districts.”
This senior class is a little extra special for Angle because he’s spent nearly the past decade coaching them.
“They’re kind of my first group that’s leading the charge for the future,” Angle said. “These seniors are the first group I started coaching with at the kids club before I was a high school coach. Now, they’re the ones creating the culture and setting the mindset of what we want to build on for the future.”
The Sikeston boys started things off with a 42-18 win over West Plains but ended the evening with a 43-29 loss to Poplar Bluff.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 17-0 lead before the Mules came storming back.
“I thought we performed well,” senior Connor Lawrence said. “Poplar Bluff is a tough team and our guys competed.”
Lawrence, a black belt in taekwondo, plans to attend the United States Military Academy at West Point and become and officer in the U.S. Army.
“I am grateful to be a part of this senior group of guys because they have pushed me to be the best that I can be,” he said. “I can always count on them. They’re like brothers. I can ask any of them for help and I know they would be there for me.”
Lawrence said it was a bittersweet feeling competing in the Field House for the final time.
“We’re getting ready for districts, sectionals and the postseason, and we’re all excited for all that stuff, but this was the last time that many of us will ever wrestler in here,” Lawrence said. “So, it was nice to just take a moment and soak everything in.”
In a reversal of fortune, the Sikeston girls started the evening off with a 42-36 loss to West Plains but finished strong with a decisive 36-12 win over Poplar Bluff.
“I thought everyone performed well,” said senior Alayna Ray. “Everyone tried their hardest.”
Ray said it hasn’t hit her yet that it was her final time competing in the Field House but instead chose to focus on memories she’s had the past several seasons.
“I’ll definitely always remember how loud everyone cheers,” she said. “It’s always felt like a family out here. Everyone is always really supportive of all of us.”
Both teams will return to action at the Jackson Quad on Jan. 11.
“We have to continue to go into the wrestling room every day and stay consistent,” Angle said. “We have a lot of good teammates. I know they’re going to push each other into always wanting more.”
