SIKESTON -- Cape Girardeau Central High's boys soccer team did something for the first time in school history Tuesday -- but it's something the Tigers would just as soon have not been a part of.

The Tigers suffered their first-ever loss to Sikeston as Andrew Lawson pumped home four goals during the Bulldogs' 5-4 home-field victory.

"We didn't play real well, but Sikeston probably played as well as I've seen them play," said Central coach Tom Doyle, whose squad fell to 2-5-2. "Mr. Lawson obviously put the ball in the net and that's the name of the game."

Nathan Gibbar scored two goals for Central while Bryan Welker and Brett McNabb each had one.

Central trailed 2-1 at halftime and 5-2 in the second half. The Tigers closed to within a goal and then bounced two shots off the post in the final six minutes.

Central's JV got its first win of the year with a 3-2 decision over Sikeston. Paul Miller, Kevin Cox and Matt Kennard scored for the Tigers (1-2).

The Tigers play at Poplar Bluff Thursday.

Defense was the name of the game Tuesday as the Bulldogs and visiting Mules played to a scoreless tie.

"The defense was very solid," said Notre Dame coach Brad Wittenborn. "There were very few shots."

"We had the better scoring chances, but their goalie made a couple nice saves," Wittenborn said. "Our offense wasn't clicking as well as it had been."

Notre Dame's JV improved to 3-0-1 with a 2-0 win over the Mules. Adam Obermiller scored both goals.
