O’FALLON, Mo. — A quick exit and a double dose of frustration – that's the bittersweet Christmas cocktail the Sikeston girls’ basketball team sipped on after back-to-back defeats at the St. Dominic Christmas Tournament.

The No. 6 seeded Lady Bulldogs (4-7) fell 45-25 to the No. 3 seeded Timberland Lady Wolves (5-4) on Wednesday and 52-48 to the No. 7 seeded St. Charles West Lady (2-8) on Thursday.

“We didn’t show to play [against Timberland],” said Siketon coach Vaughn Shephard. “We were the better team but just didn’t show up nothing else needs to be said about it.”

Landri Hammontree and Kennedi Sims each scored eight points to lead Sikeston in the opening-round loss.

In the consolation bracket against St. Charles West, Sikeston overcame a slow start but was ultimately unable to claw its way back, despite a valiant second-half effort.

“The girls played better defensively but we couldn’t get our shots to fall,” Shephard said. “Alex Segers was in the zone and played well defensively. Marlie Crook played a good game too.”

Segers led the team with 22 points, while Crook added 16.

Sikeston hosts Saxony Lutheran (7-3) on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2024.
