Cape Girardeau Central High softball coach Don Lang has had some exceptional players during his long tenure at the school.

But Lang says as far as doing it all, Abby Harris tops the list.

"Abby is probably the most complete player I've had in my 14 or 15 years coaching at Central," said Lang. "That's taking into account speed, defense, the bat, her arm. She just has the total package."

And Harris will be taking that package to Delta State because the Central senior recently signed a letter of intent to play softball for the Division II college in Mississippi.

"They've got a good program going and Abby is a good pickup for them," said Lang.

Harris, a four-year starter at catcher for the Lady Tigers, broke a host of single-season and career school records at Central.

Among the single-season marks she now holds are: most at-bats (79), most singles (29), most hits (39), most stolen bases (29, out of 29 attempts) and best fielding percentage (1.000).

She also holds career records for on-base percentage (.591), stolen bases (71) and fielding percent (.993).

Harris, who earned all-state honors as a senior when she batted .355, hit .409 for her Central career, including .494 as a junior.

"Abby had an excellent career for Central High School, no doubt about it," Lang said.

An impressive all-around athlete, Harris has also lettered in volleyball, basketball, track and soccer during her Central athletic career.

Harris will become the second recent Central softball standout to play for Delta State in the past. Another ex-Lady Tiger star, Carrie Robert, is in her senior season at the school.
