WICHITA, Kan. -- Southeast Missouri State University's baseball team put up a battle here Tuesday night before finally going down at the hands of one of the nation's premier teams.
Wichita State, ranked 13th nationally, scored seven runs in the final two innings to pull away for an 11-4 victory.
The Shockers improved to 14-4 while the Indians fell to 4-12. The teams will close out their two-game series at 5 p.m. today.
Casey Davis and Kevin Hooper both had three of Wichita State's 14 hits while Matt Patrick, Aaron Abram and John Adams all added two hits.
LaMonte Collier had two of Southeast's seven hits.
Ben Thomas improved to 3-0 as he pitched the first six innings. Thomas allowed six hits and one run while striking out nine.
Troy Pehle, making his first start of the season, was solid for the Indians. Pehle went 4 1/3 innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs. He fanned two and walked three.
David Michel gave up four hits and one run in 1 2/3 innings. Talley Haines allowed five hits and five earned runs in one inning while Dan Huesgen hurled one scoreless frame.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first, the Indians tied it in the second. Jeff Bebej led off with a single, moved to third on Mike Miller's double and scored on Brad Hoener's squeeze bunt.
Wichita State took the lead for good with two in the fifth and the Shockers added one in the sixth to go ahead 4-1. The Shockers then broke the game open with two in the seventh and five in the eighth.
