Cape Central advanced every one of its relay teams to the Class 4 Sectional 1 meet. The Tigers took district titles in the girls' 4x100m, 4x200m, and 4x400m relay.
“Pretty sure that's the first time I can remember that every single one of our relays (advanced),” Tigers head coach Collin Sheridan said. “We typically had been getting the majority of them out but to get both of the 4x800s out all of our spring relays and both 4x400s, that's it's definitely a really nice feeling. We got a lot of kids that are grouping together pretty well and coalescing.”
“I think our kids exceeded a little bit of the expectations,” said Tigers coach Stephen Hemby. “We put our kids in the spot to be successful throughout the year to be able to compete when they get here.”
Normally, the Tigers would have senior star Ryan Seabaugh anchoring the 4x400m. However, he maxed out his events by running in the 4x800m and placing third in the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m.
“We had Jamauri Brooks-Davis step up in a spot and he competed really well, had a good split,” Tigers coach Ty Crowden said. “Just a good effort all around, it’s why we're able to move forward.”
Amiyah Mackins won the only individual district championship for the Tigers by taking gold in the girls’ 400m. Freshman Kent Sheridan finished second in pole vault and Brooks-Davis took second in the long jump.
Perryville sent three girls and the boys 4x100m relay to sectionals. The 4x100m finished in fourth with a time of 44.39. Hallee Wengert placed third in both the 100m and 200m. Tegan Bishop placed second in the 1600m and third in the 3200m. Ellie Gerler finished second in the girls' shotput.
“I think all of them have a good chance to to get through (sectionals),” Perryville coach Tyson Brown said. “They just have to perform. If they all PR and they all perform, they can get through.”
Both sectional meets will take place at Hillsboro on Saturday, May 20.
