Southeast Missouri hammered out five home runs and its fourth straight win as the Indians defeated Memphis 12-9 at Capaha Field Wednesday.
Jeremy Johnson provided the game's final homer as he broke a 9-9 tie with a two-run shot in the bottom of the eighth. It was part of a three-run eighth for the Indians, who had seen Memphis (5-13) tie the game in the top of the inning with five runs.
Kevin Meyer, Clemente Bonilla, Darin Kinsolving and Charlie Marino all had home runs for Southeast, which enjoyed its third five-homer day in the four-game homestand. The Indians scored 12 or more runs in three of the four games.
Johnson's home run, off loser Sean Carlson (0-2) made a winner of Todd Pennington, the last of five Indian pitchers. Pennington (1-0) pitched the final 1 2-3 innings.
Southeast (12-4) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second as Meyer clouted a three-run homer in the inning. Memphis tied the score in the fourth when Tyler Shelton belted a grand slam off Indian starter Tommy Thomas, who was otherwise impressive in four innings of work. Thomas struck out nine Tigers, walked one and allowed four hits.
Thomas was followed to the mound by Jeffrey Hilz, Brandon Smith, Augie Casson and Pennington. Hilz did not allow a hit in two innings. Smith and Casson were roughed up in the Tiger eighth.
Southeast scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth and two in the fifth for a 9-4 lead.
Johnson, Marino and Shane Allen all finished with two hits in Southeast's 13-hit attack.
