Scott Co. tags first loss on Paducah

The Scott County American Legion baseball team handed the host squad its first loss of the season Friday during the Paducah, Ky., tournament.

Scott County scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to stun Paducah 6-5.

Scott County, which had lost its tournament opener 9-3 to Ballwin, Mo., on Thursday, will end pool play today with an 11 a.m. game against Harrisburg, Ill.

Trailing 5-4 entering its final at-bat in the bottom of the seventh, Scott County (10-7) rallied with one out.

Trent Moses singled, Blake Dirnberger doubled and both runners scored on Aaron Jenkins walk-off single.

Jon Simpher pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings in relief for the victory.

Moses, Dirnberger, Jenkins, Caleb Daughhetee and Jacob Essner all had two of Scott County's 10 hits.

"It was an exciting game and a big win for us," Scott County manager Tom Dirnberger said.

Jackson did not fare as well, suffering its second straight lopsided loss in the tournament.

Festus routed Jackson 11-0 in a game stopped after six innings by the mercy rule. On Thursday, Jackson fell to 11-1 to host Paducah in five innings. Jackson (9-13) had just seven hits in the two games.

Jackson plays Ballwin at 2 p.m. today.

No information was received on Cape Girardeau's second game in the tournament. Cape won its opener on Thursday.
