Loren Groves bested two of her own school records as the Scott City boys and girls track and field teams won a quad meet in Chaffee, Mo., on Thursday.
The boys won easily with 140 points. Chaffee finished second with 51, followed by Kelly (45), Portageville (36) and Oran (19). Scott City's girls edged Chaffee 92 to 87. Kelly finished third (37) and Oran fourth (15).
Groves won three events for the Rams, including her school-record throws in the discus (137-1) and shotput (37-2). Groves also won the 100 hurdles (16.8).
On the boys side Kelly's Tyson Glaser was the big winner. Glaser won the 100-meter dash (11.9), discus (103-11), long jump (8-11) and triple jump (38-8).
Notre Dame drops dual meet at Poplar Bluff
Poplar Bluff's boys and girls swept Notre Dame in a season-opening meet for both teams in Poplar Bluff, Mo.
The Mules won the boys' meet 112-30 and the girls' meet 88-57.
Both of Notre Dame's teams turned in four victories. Tyler Cuba led the boys by winning both the 100 (11.46) and 200 (22.83) and running a leg on the victorious 800 relay with Jordan Janet, Cory Beussink and Adam Prasanphanich. Beussink was a winner in the triple jump (35-3/4).
Kasie Essner won the 1,600 (6:44.37) for the Notre Dame girls, and Ashley Millham won the high jump (4-6). Millham also teamed up with Emily Bira, Laura Weissmueller and Erin Pfau to win the 800 relay (1:156.74). The latter three also combined with Amber Karnes to win the 400 relay (1:55.12).
GOLF
Notre Dame wins four-team meet
Notre Dame blew away the field in a quad meet at Bent Creek in Jackson.
The Bulldogs shot a 175, six strokes ahead of Fredericktown. Malden (192) and Clearwater (210) rounded out the field. Jon Blattel of Notre Dame won the individual title with a 42. Travis Siebert (43), Adam Rigdon (44) and Jon Obermark (46) also had strong days for Notre Dame.
BASEBALL
Bell City 14, Clarkton 2
Bell City opened its season by avenging a sectional basketball loss. Using a seven-run first inning, Bell City (1-0) defeated Clarkton at home in five innings.
The Cubs had six of their 14 hits in the first inning, capped by a RBI triple by Jack Daniels, who finished with two hits.
Ty Brown, who went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, added a two-run homer in the third inning.
Winning pitcher Ben Duncan matched Clarkton's hit total by going 3-for-3, including two doubles. Duncan struck out seven and walked five in five innings.
Kelly 5, Woodland 4
Woodland cut Kelly's lead to one in the seventh but could not complete the comeback on the road.
Woodland trailed 5-1 after four innings but cut the lead to one with one out in the final inning. Kendall Deason relieved Kelly starter Major Burger to get the final two outs for the save.
Luke Johnson pitched six strong innings for the Cardinals, allowing four earned runs and 10 hits. Travis Benfield led the offense with two hits, including a triple for Woodland. Josh Foster went 2-for-2.
SOFTBALL
Scott City 11, Woodland 7
Scott City withstood a late rally to improve to 1-1.
Amanda O'Brien went the distance for the Rams. O'Brien allowed seven runs on seven hits and struck out seven. Emily Miller, Kristin Schaefer, Jessica Warren, Jenny Glency and Lindsey Amick all had two hits for Scott City.
GIRLS SWIMMING
Nerinx Hall 119, Central 67
Central swimmers won four events, but it wasn't enough to avoid a dual loss at home to Nerinx Hall.
Katie Maginel led the way for Central (2-2) with victories in the 200 IM (2:28.56) and 100 butterfly (1:09.15). Jackie Erlacker (180.90) led a 1-2-3 finish in diving and Cassie Kipper won the 500 freestyle (5:50.84).
Kipper became the Tigers' first state qualifer by finishing second in the 200 freestyle in 2:07.25.
