Emily Essner struck out seven in a complete-game victory and added two hits to give Scott City's softball team a 7-1 victory against Saxony Lutheran at home in its season-opener.

The game marked the first varsity softball game for Saxony Lutheran. Nicole McClard struck out 10 for the Crusaders in the loss.

Jenni Heisserer added two hits for the Rams.

Kara Verseman had two hits for Saxony Lutheran.

Seabaugh added four hits for the Bobcats (1-0). Shea Smith, Jodi Menz and Jessica Drew had three hits apiece for Delta, while Mande Sanders added two hits.

GIRLS SOCCER Noon Optimist Tournament

Perryville and Notre Dame each used overtime wins to set up today's semifinal match in the Noon Optimist Tournament.

Kendra Schilli scored from Alicia Kueker with about 8 minutes remaining in the second overtime to give Perryville a 2-1 win over Sikeston. Kueker had the other goal early in the first half from Amber Hacker.

Notre Dame also needed two overtimes to defeat Marion, Ill., 3-2.

The Bulldogs will face Perryville at 8 p.m. tonight in a semifinal.

Meridith Medlin scored twice for Notre Dame, including the game-winner on a cross from Destiny Dirnberger with 2 minutes left in the second overtime. Mindy Siebert added the other goal from Dirnberger. Emily Blattel had an assist for the Bulldogs.

Central got a goal from Meghan Orr at the 35-minute mark to win its opener 1-0 over Farminton. Jackie Twidwell picked up the shutout.

Central will face St. Vincent at 6 p.m. tonight in the other semifinal.

The Squaws won 4-3 in a shootout over Poplar Bluff. Courtney Besand scored the lone goal for St. Vincent in regulation, and Jessica Welker had the game-winning goal in the sixth round of the shootout. Megan Wengert made 13 saves in goal for St. Vincent.

BASEBALL Kennett 5, Central 1

Central fell behind 3-0 after one inning and could not recover in a home loss.

The Tigers fell to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in SEMO Conference play.

Lance Young took the loss, going five innings. Young allowed five hits, four runs, had nine strikeouts and walked four.

Brittany Menz made a state cut in the 200-yard freestyle, as Notre Dame won a three-team meet at Poplar Bluff.

Notre Dame also swept all three relays, and got individual wins from Mollie Messmer (50 free), Ashley Nenninger (100 free), Rachel Henson (500 free) and Katelyn Enderle (100 breast).

Maria Esswein won the 200 IM and 100 fly for St. Vincent.
