JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Scott City sophomore Loren Groves earned all-state status in four events to account for all her team's points and a seventh-place at the Missouri Class 2A Track and Field Championships, which concluded Saturday.
Groves, all-state in three events as a freshman, finished second in the discus and the 100-meter hurdles, third in the shot put and fourth in the 300 hurdles for 27 team points.
Groves was edged out by 0.06 seconds by Meghan Schuckenbrock of Louisiana, Mo., in the 100 hurdles, covering the distance in 15.75 seconds. She threw the discus 120 feet 6 inches and clocked 48.05 in the 300 hurdles. On Friday, she threw the shot put 34-5.75.
Scott City's 3,200-meter relay team of Makenzie Cartwright, Kacie Cartwright, Jenny Pinkston and Alisha Obermann finished 16th (11:16.70).
Led by sprinter Adam Prasanphanich, Notre Dame completed its first season with seven all-staters.
Prasanphanich finished fourth in the 100 (11.64) and fifth in the 200 (23.01). He teamed with Andy Arnzen, Austin Critchlow and Garrett Holzum to place eighth (1:34.58) in the 800 relay.
Freshman pole-vaulter Bryce Willen cleared a personal-best 11-6 to finish seventh. Willen, the only freshman in the field, came into the meet with a career-best of 11-0.
The Bulldogs had a pair of 15th-place finishes on the girls' side. Megan Rosenquist clocked a school-record 13:25 in the 3,200 and the quartet of Katie Daniel, Kasie Essner, Sarah Unterreiner and Lauren Beussink finished the 3,200 relay in 10:50.
Kelly's two-time 1,600 state champion, Adam Daughhetee, finished fourth in 4:33.85. Daughhetee, a senior, was five seconds off the winning pace.
Kelly junior Nathan Lewer placed second in the high jump, clearing 6-2, and the Hawks' 3,200 relay team of Adam Lofton, Ashley Hahn, Lance Ferrell and Daughhetee finished seventh (8:36.08).
CLASS 4A SECTIONAL: Central and Jackson track athletes successfully qualified for the Class 4A state championships next weekend through Saturday's sectional meet at Parkway South in St. Louis.
Sprinter Mario Whitney, with wins in the 100 (10.5) and 200 (21.3), leads a group of seven Jackson boys. James Fortner was second in the 110 hurdles (15.1), Stuart McIntosh third in the pole vault (13-0) and the Indians' 3,200-meter relay team of Jody Ressel, Isaac Venable, Josh Minson and Josh Garmon placed fourth (8:10).
Heather West won the long jump (17-8), took second in the triple jump (36-11) and ran a leg on the winning 400 relay team (50.2), which included Rachel Smith, Rebecca Martin and Jeanna Bolen.
Bolen, Martin, Heather Jones and Rachel Lowes won the 1,600 relay in 4:08.2, while the 800 relay team of Smith, Martin, Bolen and Trisha Kluesner was fourth (1:46.5).
Central's Anthony Harris qualified in three events: long jump (third, 20-6), high jump (third, 6-2) and triple jump (fourth, 43-9). Jeremiah Dukes was second in the triple jump (44-10.75).
Chris Smith won the shot put (52-8) and was second in the discus (145-0), while the 1,600-relay team of Zeno Walker, Monroe Hicks, Will Johnson and Calen Wills ran a season-best 3:23.41 for second.
Central's first-place finisher on the girls' side was senior Lainie Bohnsack with a high jump of 5-2.
The 3,200-relay team of Kim Pancoast, Jennifer Pancoast, Alex Wieser and Whitney Pingel established a school record of 9:40.08 -- the old mark was 9:43.67, set in 1988 -- with a second-place finish.
Doschae Jones took second in the discus (120-0), Ashley Colon second in the shot put (35-1) and Vicki Wilson had fourths in the 100 (12.6) and 200 (26.6). Kim Pancoast qualified in the 3,200 with a fourth-place time of 11:40.20.
CLASS 3A SECTIONAL: Emily Amberger anchored the second-place 1,600 relay (4:10.35) and third-place 800 relay (1:48.54) teams and finished second in the open 400 (63.2) to pace the Perryville girls' state qualifiers in a sectional meet at Festus, Mo.
Amberger followed Gina Buerck, Sarah Lappe and Melissa Crannick on the relays.
Kelly Kassell had third-place finishes in the long jump (15-2.5) and pole vault (8-6) and Hannah Fritsche took fourth in the shot put (34-9 1/2).
Perryville's Kyle Dobbelare won in 14.6 in the 110 hurdles. Dobblelare was fourth in the long jump (20-9.25).
Kevin Bohnert qualified in the 100 (2nd, 11.09) and 200 (third, 23.1). Kent Hadler was second in the 3,200 (10:04.5) and anchored the third-place 3,200 relay (8:19) of Terry Wood, Brian Schlichting and Brian Hadler.
Also qualifying were Brian Hadler in the 800 (third, 2:03.4), Tim Chitwood in the 1,600 (fourth, 4:32) and Chris Porter in the triple jump (fourth, 41-11.25).
Baseball
LEOPOLD 4, VIBURNUM 0
LEOPOLD, Mo. -- Eric O'Hare fired a three-hit shutout to help Advance repeat as Class 1A, District 3 baseball champions.
Advance, the second seed, is 6-6 and will seek to avenge last year's sectional loss when it travels to Ellington on Wednesday. Ellington, which upset state-ranked Winona, ended the Hornets' 2001 season with a 4-3 loss.
Viburnum, the fourth seed, finished its season 5-9.
O'Hare, a junior, struck out nine and didn't walk a batter in improving to 3-1.
He received all the run support he needed on an RBI double by sophomore Greg Bugg in the bottom of the third. Senior Chase Robins upped the lead to 3-0 in the fourth with a two-out, two-run double. The Hornets closed out the scoring on a run-scoring single by sophomore Jacob Daniel in the sixth.
Daniel went 3-for-4 in the Hornets' 11-hit attack. Jason Bahr, Bugg and Robins all went 2-for-3.
BOYS' Tennis
KIRKWOOD 5, CENTRAL 3
KIRKWOOD, Mo. -- Kirkwood (16-0) remained undefeated with a Class 4A sectional semifinal victory.
Central (13-4) split the six singles matches with Kirkwood after the Tigers' James Russell, Andrew Eaton and Eric Daume posted victories.
Kirkwood advanced by winning both doubles matches.
The loss ends the season for the Tigers, with the exception of the doubles team of Trevor Blattner and Andy Tansil, which had already qualified for the state individual tournament May 24-25 in Springfield, Mo.
