Despite being less than a day removed from a mercy-rule loss, the Scott City Rams had Class 1 powerhouse Holcomb’s number early and held on for a 9-5 win at home.
The Rams improved to 15-7 with the win, while Holcomb dropped to 21-7. The Hornets went 16-2 in April, but have lost two games in two days to begin the month of May.
The Rams scored two runs in the first, two in the second, and poured on five in the fourth, mounting up an eight-run lead before Holcomb’s four-run rally in the seventh inning came up short.
“Logan Schiwitz did a great job on the mound, hitting her spots and mixing up pitches when she needed to,” Scott City coach Alexis Atchley said. “We played great defense behind her. Our outfielders caught every ball hit to them and our infield knocked every ball down and threw them out at first base. We made the outs behind her, and then we do what we need to do batting-wise as well.”
On the heels of Monday’s one-hit performance, the Scott City offense rebounded with four batters recording multi-hit games: Averie O’Brien, Graycie Conklin, Halle Comer, and Harley Glueck. Olivia Ponder’s one hit went for a double, working to lead the Rams in runs batted in with three.
Logan Schiwitz pitched 6.1 innings, earning five runs with four coming in the Hornets’ seventh-inning rally. Schiwitz allowed nine hits, a walk, and struck a batter out in an outing in which her first six innings saw just one run cross.
“We've scored several runs in a lot of our games, and that's kind of our philosophy,” Atchley said. “If we can get on base, we'll get runs. We’ve always got to play with that mentality.”
Scott City nears the spring softball postseason, with district tournament play beginning on Saturday, May 6. As the Rams continue to build steam, just one game remains to iron the team out before their Saturday rematch with Clearwater.
Despite defeating the Tigers 13-0 in the recent Swing Pink Tournament, the Rams are staying humble ahead of their district quarterfinal bout.
“They were not the team that I know we're going to see on Saturday,” Atchley said. “We have to go in with the mindset that it's a new team. It's a new day and we need to go out and play our game. If we play our game, then we will be just fine.
“We look forward to this postseason. We're in a really tough district. We have West County and Ste. Genevieve and Park Hills Central who have won districts and been to quarterfinal games several times in the last couple of years. We're in a good district, but we feel that we can compete with anyone in that district on any given day.”
