SCOTT CITY -- Gene Masterson's pin in the heavyweight bout secured Scott City High's first wrestling win over Dexter in over three years Tuesday night as the Rams defeated the Bearcats 37-30.
"This is the big win we've been looking toward for a long time," said third-year Scott City coach Rick Bohn. "It's our first win against Dexter in a long time and the first one against them since I've been coaching here."
The Rams got pins from five different wrestlers to secure their first dual triumph of the season.
Donnie Sturm and Curt Cauble got Scott City off to a 12-0 lead with first-period pins at 103-pounds and 112-pounds.
After a loss at 119, the Rams upped the lead to 19-6 with a major decision by Alex Szilak at 125 and a decision by Chris White at 130.
Dexter answered with its second fall of the night at 135, but Scott City got a pin from Blake Phelps at 140 to counter that.
The Bearcats cut the lead down to one, 25-24, with back-to-back falls at 145 and 152. But Tom Cochran kept the lead in the Rams' hands with a fall at 160.
After both teams forfeited at 171, Dexter moved into position to win the dual with a first-period win at 189.
But Masterson's fall at heavyweight denied the Bearcats that pleasure, pinning Jeff Woods in just 1:11 to secure the victory.
"We did a good job tonight," Bohn said. "The younger kids are starting to wrestle more aggressively. Hopefully we're peaking."
