Scott City's run of dominance continues with a 56-14 win over Chaffee on Friday, in Chaffee, Mo.
Scott City stuck first when quarterback Mark Panagos threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Jackson Gloth, giving the Rams a 7-0 early in the first quarter.
Chaffee struck back with a two-yard rushing touchdown by quarterback Carson Spies to tie the game. The Red Devils had five linemen pushing forward and five running backs forming an entourage for Spies whenever he carried the ball.
The Rams went on to score six unanswered rushing touchdowns to take total control of the game. The six scores were split evenly between Panagos and running back Tyson Underwood, who also rushed for 204 yards on 12 carries. Underwood now has 924 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns on the season.
"We knew coming in we'd be able to run the football with him and with Mark," Scott City coach Jim May said, "and they both did a pretty good job."
Panagos rushed for 126 yards and threw for 100 yards for a total of four touchdowns. The star senior now has 1,229 passing yards and 624 rushing yards on the season.
"He played fairly well," May said. "He was a little shakey early. They were doing some things defensively we weren't ready for. Once we settled that in and got dialed in, everything went fairly well."
Gloth scored the last touchdown for the Rams on a 13-yard run. Gloth, who originally entered the offense as the next quarterback, has grown into being a more complete offensive weapon for the Rams.
"Jackson's a really good player," May said. "He's fast, he's tall, he's long, he can do a lot of things. He can throw and catch it and run with it. We're pretty diverse. We got like four receivers with probably 300-plus yards receiving. So we don't just go to one guy and all of them can go."
Chaffee scored one more touchdown before the final whistle, a 22-yard pass from Spires to tight end Blake Yarbro.
The Red Devils made plenty of gains on the ground. Junior running back Logan Horton rushed for 112 yards on 13 carries, making it the first time all season he has eclipsed the century mark. Spies rushed for 82 yards to push his season total to 704 yards. Shelton Simmons also added 62 yards through the ground.
Since Week 3, the Rams have scored over 50 points in four of their last five games, all resulting in victories. The one time they didn't score 50 points, they scored 32 in a loss to Portageville, but are one of only two teams to score that much on the Bulldogs this season.
The Rams (5-2) finish the season by traveling to Charleston on Thursday, Oct. 12, and hosting Doniphan on Friday, Oct. 20. Scott City has gone through the season having only played two opponents from Class 2 District 1 (wins against Kelly and Malden). Powerhouses like New Madrid County Central and Valle Catholic await them in the postseason, but the Rams are getting hot on the way to the district tournament.
"I don't feel like we played with the same intensity this week as we did last week," May said. "But we executed when we needed to execute. We did some really good things but we also made some silly mistakes you got to clean up because to beat the teams we want to beat at the end of the year, that won't get that done."
Chaffee (3-4) has lost two in a row, but the opportunity for its first winning regular season since 2017 is still reachable. The Red Devils travel to Doniphan on Friday, Oct. 13, and host Grandview on Friday, Oct. 20.
