The Scott City softball team grabbed a 6-0 lead after four innings and held on to capture the Oran Tournament title Saturday with a 6-2 win over the host Eagles.

The Rams (14-3) had 12 hits to support starting pitcher Emily Essner. Essner struck out 14 and allowed just one hit in a complete-game victory.

Oran (11-2) dropped just its second game of the season with the loss.

"It was a nice win," Scott City coach Sally O'Brien said. "Emily really pitched well."

Lauren Schaefer, Becky Holder, Kim Klipfel, Chelsi Bradley and Lindsey Amick had two hits apiece for the Rams.

BASEBALL Chaffee Red Devils Classic

Chaffee hammered out 26 hits in two games to win the consolation title.

The Red Devils (7-8) defeated Egyptian, Ill., 9-5 in the semifinal, then eased by New Madrid County Central 11-4 in the consolation final.

Against Egyptian, Chris Hanback, Josh Steger and Steven Dooley each had two of Chaffee's 12 hits.

Adam Crowe earned the pitching win, striking out eight batters in seven innings.

In the consolation title game, Chaffee allowed four runs in the first inning but shut out New Madrid the rest of the way.

Dooley struck out 10 in a complete game.

Jerrod Steger went 4-for-5 to lead Chaffee's 14-hit assault, and Hanback, Dooley and Korey Chapman each added two hits.

Scott County tournament

Advance and Dexter won semifinal games to set up a Stoddard County matchup in the Scott County Baseball Tournament.

The Hornets squeaked by Cooter 5-4 in eight innings. Trenton Moses hit a walkoff home run for Advance.

Moses and Jeremy Limbaugh each had two RBIs for the Hornets, and Kevin Adkins had three hits.

Limbaugh relieved Moses in the seventh inning and picked up the win.

The finals were scheduled for Saturday, but prom conflicts forced the game to be moved to Monday at a time and location to be determined.

Dexter made its way to the final with a 19-10 win over Oran. The Eagles (13-4) committed 12 errors and gave up 13 unearned runs in the semifinal.

The teams combined for 30 hits. Kody Campbell, Chase Seyer and Tyler Beardslee had two hits apiece for the Eagles.

Oran bounced back with a 13-2 win over Cooter in the third-place game. Seyer needed just 55 pitched to get the five-inning complete-game victory.

Campbell led Oran with five RBIs, with a grand slam among his three hits. Caleb Seyer and Austin Dumey added two hits apiece, and Beardslee had a home run.

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD Chaffee Relays

Saxony Lutheran won the final event -- the 1,600 relay -- to finish ahead of Chaffee by one point.

Chaffee had a 48-47 lead over the Crusaders heading into the 1,600 relay, but Saxony finished nearly 20 seconds ahead of the host.

Saxony won six of the 12 events in the four-team meet, including three of the last four.
