SCOTT CENTRAL GIRLS ROLL IN TOURNEY FINALS

ORAN -- Scott County Central High's girls basketball team had an easy time Saturday night in winning the championship of the Scott-Mississippi Conference Tournament.

The top-seeded Bravettes dismantled second-seeded Kelly 113-63 to run their record on the season to 10-0. Kelly, which had won nine straight games, fell to 11-3.

"It was a good game the first quarter but later it got out of hand," said Kelly coach Clay Vangilder. "They're just so darn quick, every one of them."

Salena McCray and Tabitha Harris paced the Bravettes in scoring with 24 points apiece. Shatonya Fort was close behind with 23, Yolanda Banks had 19, Tonia Harris 13 and Yolanda Betts 10.

Kelly got 13 points from Kara Heuring, Kim Essner and Karen Riley.

Scott Central raced out to a 27-18 lead after one quarter. It was 49-29 at halftime and the Bravettes ended all the suspense with a 30-15 third-quarter edge.

"We played hard," Vangilder said. "We were down 20 at the half and I thought if we could get it down to 12 or 14 we'd have a chance. But they came out and got after it and it went the other way."

Scott Central also won the junior varsity title with a 69-38 triumph over Kelly. Chiquita Pullen poured in 39 points for the JV Bravettes. Julie Rogers and Carman Thomas added 10 apiece.

Kelly's JV got 14 points from Tracy Moore.
