The jump from junior varsity to varsity in any sport is sure to be a tough one.
For Jackson sophomore Trent Schorey, he’s made the jump from junior varsity to varsity on the Indians tennis team, and he’s also assumed the role of the number 1 on varsity.
“Coming up it’s been really challenging,” Schorey said. “I’m just expecting to learn playing against these guys with better shots and better placements.”
Schorey hopes playing other teams’ number ones teaches him how to hit better shots and have a better-shot placement.
“I just go out trying to learn,” Schorey said. “A lot of these guys just place the ball so well.”
Because he is learning the ropes as he plays at the varsity level, Schorey said the Jackson coaching staff has been crucial in helping him maintain composure.
“In the beginning, I got a little more flustered,” Schorey said. “They just tell me to take my time and the more I take my time the better my shots are.”
Schorey said developing his composure is something that has grown considerably already this season.
“At the beginning of the year not getting many wins and playing some of the top players was frustrating,” Schorey said. “As I’ve gone through I’ve learned it’s not always going to happen the way I want it to.”
Schorey said the experience he’s getting now as just a sophomore will set him up for success in the future.
“It does excite me,” Schorey said. “Some of the players I’ve played against have told me how much potential they think I have and it really gives me a boost of confidence.”
On Thursday, Schorey fell in singles to Cape Central’s Jacob Ford 8-3, despite the fact he fell behind 6-0 to start, Schorey was able to rally back.
“It just shows me I can actually compete with these guys,” Schorey said. “It gives me a lot of confidence in the end. My coaches and my teammates have told me to keep going and that just really helps.”
Schorey and the Indians are back in action at 4 p.m. on Monday, April 17 when they host Notre Dame at Jackson City Park.
