The Saxony Lutheran boys basketball team survived a poor performance from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to prevent an upset bid from host Chaffee 49-46 on Saturday in the opening round of the Class 2 District 3 tournament.
The Crusaders, seeded second, shot 5-for-12 from line in fourth quarter. Saxony (22-3) hit 18 of 32 overall.
Bret Steffens led the Crusaders with 15 points.
Andy Hendrix led No. 7 Chaffee with 13 points, and Adam Horton had 11.
Saxony Lutheran will face No. 3 Puxico in the semifinals on Tuesday. Puxico routed No. 6 Bloomfield 74-42.
Top-seeded Advance (18-8) cruised by No. 8 Meadow Heights 82-42. Alex Steil led the Hornets with 25 points, Cody Mitchell had 12 points, and Trenton Moses added 10.
Tyler Wagner led the Panthers with 15 points.
The Hornets will face No. 5 St. Vincent in the semifinals on Tuesday. The Indians (13-11) upset No. 4 Richland 51-41 thanks to a 13-4 scoring edge in the second quarter.
Gregory Finger led St. Vincent with 19 points and Chris Wengert had 11 points and 13 rebounds.
