The Saxony Lutheran boys track and field team qualified for the state meet in nine events and claimed the Class 1 District 1 team crown Saturday at the Missouri School for the Deaf in Fulton, Mo.

The district title was the first for the Crusaders, who will travel to Jefferson City May 19 and 20 for the state competition.

"We ran well," Saxony coach Larry Cleair said. "Our kids made a statement."

Saxony tallied 126 points, followed by defending district champion Viburnum with 95, Chamois with 69 and Chaffee at 66.

The Crusaders finished fifth in the state last year in Class 1 while Viburnum was 24th.

Alex Jauch and Brandon Etzold each won two individual events for Saxony. Jauch claimed the 200-meter race and the 300 hurdles, while Etzold won the 1,600 and 800.

Saxony took first in the 3,200, 800 and 1,600 relays. Max Wieser and Grant Lehmann were on all three squads.

The Crusaders' Tim Lorenz won the shot put, Lehmann was first in the 400 and Ross Gage placed second in the 800 to advance to the state event.

On the girls side, Chaffee qualified 10 athletes for the state meet and repeated as district runner-up.

Whitney Schlosser won the discus event, and Sarah Dooley placed first in the shot put.

The Red Devils were second in both the 3,200 and 1,600 relays, and Christa Beck placed second in the 100 hurdles.

Class 2 District 1

Scott City's girls qualified for the state meet in two events at the Class 2 District 1 meet in East Prairie. The 3,200 relay squad of Whitney Tapely, Megan Eaton, Brittany Licare and Beth Razer placed second, and Amanda Braun was second in the 100 hurdles.

For the boys, the Rams' Derek Goodin placed second in the 300 hurdles.
