The Saxony Lutheran softball team fell just short of the title at Saturday's Lady Red Devils Invitational in Chaffee.
Saxony lost to Neelyville 7-4 in the championship game of the eight-team event.
The Crusaders beat Neelyville's JV 12-0 in the opening round behind a five-inning no-hitter from Natalie Schlimpert and Sikeston 4-2 in the semifinals.
Ashley Steck was the losing pitcher in the title contest. Ashlynn Collier, Logan Welker and Abby Hadler all had two hits for the Crusaders (8-4).
Kelli Brunke pitched all seven innings for the semifinal victory against Sikeston. She also had two hits.
Schlimpert struck out five and walked two during her no-hitter in the opening round. Hadler went 3 for 3 with a triple while Welker added two hits.
Host Chaffee finished fifth after going 2-1 in the tournament. The Red Devils lost to Sikeston 11-2 in the first round, then beat Neelyville's JV 14-10 and East Prairie 13-2.
Carleigh Burnett was the winning pitcher and had three hits against East Prairie. Julia Sutterfield added two hits.
Sutterfield had four hits, including a triple and two doubles, against Neelyville's JV. Kaitlin McFerron had three hits and notched the pitching victory.
Sutterfield led Chaffee with two hits against Sikeston.
Notre Dame won three of four games Saturday to finish fifth in the 12-team Seckman tournament.
Haylie Santos pitched the shutout during a 9-0 win over Affton. Tiffany Wood had three hits.
The Bulldogs (13-2) then lost to Seckman, followed by a 6-2 victory over Pacific. Nikki Peters got the win while Jessica Westrich, Conner Elfrink and Carson Freeman all had two hits.
Santos notched the victory during an 11-5 triumph over Sullivan. Shiloh Kirn had two hits, including a home run, while Elfrink added two hits.
Forest Park Festival
Several area schools competed in Saturday's Forest Park Cross Country Festival, one of the state's largest meets that featured many of the state's top teams.
The meet was so big, in fact, that there was a discrepency with several of the individual and team finishes posted Saturday night. Corrected results should be posted online soon but until then all results are unofficial.
Notre Dame was 16th in the boys Green Division -- the tougher of the two divisions featuring most of the larger schools.
Notre Dame standout freshman Rudy McClellan covered the 5,000 meters in 16 minutes, 37.70 seconds, good for 47th place.
Jackson was listed as fielding only four runners -- one short of a full squad -- but coach Andrea Talley said five runners did compete for the Indians.
Gabe Underwood had an impressive showing for the Indians, finishing 44th in the Green Division with a time of 16:35.70.
Jackson was 22nd and Notre Dame 23rd in the girls Green Division.
Jackson sophomore Chelsea Drum had the top finish of any area runner, placing a stellar 22nd in 19:05.70.
Notre Dame was led by Ali Norder, who was 85th, while Central's top runner was Maddy McDonald in 172nd.
Oak Ridge was 22nd in the boys White Division, led by Jake LeGrand, who was 73rd.
St. Vincent had the top local finisher in the White Division as John Lipe was 58th. Scott City's Jesse Perry placed 178th.

Oakville tournament
Perryville suffered its first losses of the season, going 3-2-4 over the weekend to finish second in the consolation bracket of the 18-team Oakville tournament.
In action Saturday, the Pirates (10-2-5) beat Lee's Summit 25-14, 25-17 and Oakville 25-23, 20-25, 25-21 while losing to Lindbergh 25-19, 25-23 and Cor Jesu 25-17, 25-19.
"There was some very good competition," said Perryville coach David Mirly, who said his squad did not keep individual statistics for the tournament. "Half the schools were twice as big as us and I think the other schools were ranked."
Jackson finished pool play Saturday by splitting with Oran 21-25, 25-15.
The Indians (3-7-3) then lost to Dexter 25-18, 25-17 in the first round of Silver Bracket play and were eliminated by Lesterville 25-21, 25-21.
Hailey Mouser had four kills, eight digs and two blocks against Oran. Autumn Reid had four kills, Kayla Thurman four aces and Maci McCuan seven assists.
Mouser had 10 kills and two aces against Dexter, while McKinzie Scott recorded 12 assists.
Mouser recorded eight kills against Lesterville. McCuan had nine assists and Reid three aces.
