The future of Southeast Missouri State football coach Tony Samuel remained uncertain Monday as his original five-year contract expired.
Samuel's original five-year contract paid him $8,000 per month plus an annuity.
Even though Samuel's contract expired, he still is scheduled to attend a signing day party Wednesday at Port Cape in which he is scheduled to speak about the Redhawks' new recruits on national signing day.
Southeast is coming off one of the top seasons in the program's 104-year history. The Redhawks captured the program's first playoff berth.
The Redhawks went 9-3 for the program's first winning season since 2002 and only the third since moving up to the Football Championship Subdivision level in 1991.
Southeast won the program's first Ohio Valley Conference championship.
Samuel was named OVC coach of the year and also earned the prestigious Eddie Robinson Award, which is presented to the FCS national coach of the year.
Southeast posted a 13-32 record during Samuel's first four years before the breakout 2010 season.
