Southern Illinois freshman pitcher Colin Holderman dealt the Southeast Missouri State baseball team its first loss in 10 days with five scoreless innings on the mound at Itchy Jones Stadium in Carbondale, Illinois.

The Ohio Valley Conference-leading Redhawks recorded just four hits, and had just one off Holderman, in the 6-2 non-conference loss to the Salukis on Tuesday night, which snapped a five-game winning streak.

Southeast stranded the bases loaded in the first inning after a hit and a couple walks issued by SIU starter Connor McFadden.

SIU (10-31) got the only three runs it would need in the home half of the inning. Redhawks starter Garret Stockton walked the first batter he faced on four pitches before giving up a base hit. He struck out a pair before hitting a batter to load the bases. Designated hitter Logan Blackfan, who went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, singled in a couple of runs to make it 2-0.

Stockton reloaded the bases with another walk before a run scored on a wild pitch. Stockton, who took the loss and dropped to 1-2 on the season, walked another batter before freshman Zach Moore replaced him and recorded a strikeout to end the inning.

The Redhawks chipped into the Salukis' 3-0 lead in the top of the second. Catcher Scott Mitchell led off with a single and advanced to third when SIU right fielder Tyler Rolland dropped a fly ball off the bat of second baseman Jason Blum, who reached second on the error.

Mitchell scored on a sacrifice fly and Blum reached home on a wild pitch to cut it to 3-2.

SIU plated one run in the bottom of the fourth off Moore. It was the only run he allowed over 3 1/3 innings off work. He allowed three hits and struck out two.

Designated hitter Garrett Gandolfo singled to start the fifth before Holderman replaced McFadden.

Southeast didn't get another hit until first baseman Ryan Rippee doubled to lead off the ninth.

Holderman, who entered the game with an 11.74 ERA in six appearances, walked two batters and struck out one as he improved to 1-0 on the season.

The Salukis added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh. Left fielder Parker Osborne singled to short, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a base hit by Rolland before pitcher Greg Mosel was relieved after 1 2/3 innings.

The first pitch off reliever Ryan Lenaburg was sent into right center for an RBI double to provide the final score.

Southeast (25-15) returns to action with a three-game OVC series at Murray State (14-28, 9-9 OVC).

The series opener is set for 6 p.m. Friday. Game 2 will be played at 2 p.m. Saturday, and the series finale will start at 1 p.m. Sunday.
