Salmon lifts Angels to sixth win in a row

DETROIT -- Tim Salmon homered and drove in four runs, and Kevin Appier scattered three hits over seven innings as the Anaheim Angels beat the woeful Detroit Tigers 9-2 Tuesday night for their sixth straight win.

Salmon went 3-for-3 with a sacrifice fly, and Troy Glaus homered as Anaheim won for the 15th time in 17 games -- matching the best 17-game stretch in franchise history, which was from June 1-17, 1998.

Yankees 10, Devil Rays 3

NEW YORK -- Roger Clemens won his fifth straight start, and Jason Giambi and Jorge Posada hit consecutive homers as the Yankees got their seventh straight victory.

The benches and bullpens emptied -- but no punches were thrown -- after Derek Jeter took exception to a high-and-tight pitch from Devil Rays reliever Jesus Colome in the eighth inning. Jeter stepped into fair territory and said something to Colome, who repeatedly missed up-and-in and hit Shane Spencer during New York's six-run eighth.

Indians 6, Orioles 5

CLEVELAND -- Matt Lawton hit a two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth as the Indians rallied for four runs in their final at-bat.

Lawton hit a 2-2 pitch from Jorge Julio (2-2) over the wall in right field to snap a three-game losing streak for the Indians, who were one out away from their 20th loss in 26 games.

Red Sox 6, Athletics 2

BOSTON -- Rickey Henderson drove in two runs in place of the injured Manny Ramirez, and John Burkett remained undefeated for the Red Sox.

Burkett (4-0) scattered nine hits in six innings, but walked none as Boston opened a 13-game homestand by winning for the ninth time in 11 games and improved baseball's best record to 26-9.

Blue Jays 6, Mariners 3

TORONTO -- Tom Wilson homered twice and hit a go-ahead RBI single in the sixth inning as the Blue Jays rallied to hand Seattle a rare road loss.

Esteban Loaiza, activated from the disabled list before the game, won in his first start of the season.

Royals 8, Twins 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A J. Hinch homered and tied a career-high with four RBIs, and slumping Chuck Knoblauch also hit a home run for the Royals.

Jeff Suppan (4-4) allowed only one unearned run in eight innings, struck out six and walked none. The Royals had lost their seven previous home games against the Twins.

White Sox 15, Rangers 4

CHICAGO -- Tony Graffanino had two homers and six RBIs, and Mark Buehrle won his AL-leading seventh game for the White Sox.

Graffanino, subbing for injured second baseman Ray Durham, tied his career high with four hits as the White Sox snapped a four-game losing streak.

TWINS: Ace Brad Radke was placed on the 15-day disabled list, a day after pulling a groin muscle in a game against Kansas City. The Twins will purchase the contract of right-hander Mike Trombley from Triple-A Edmonton today. To make room for him on the 40-man roster, right-hander Joe Mays will be transferred from the 15-day to the 60-day DL.

YANKEES: Left-hander Andy Pettitte threw about 40 pitches off a bullpen mound for the first time since late last month. Pettitte said he will work off a mound again Thursday. He will likely throw batting practice before making his first rehab start.
