CAPE GIRARDEAU — The defending Class 1 state champions, the Kennett High School girls tennis team squeaked by Notre Dame, 5-4, on Tuesday.
Claire Bean, Handley McAteee and Olivia Rebstock all came through with wins at No. 1 through No. 3 singles, respectively.
Emory Kamper also claimed a singles victory, defeating Harper Raffetti 8-4 in the No. 5 slot.
Defending state champions and SEMOBall.com award winners, Bean and McAtee earned a default victory at No. 1 doubles.
Notre Dame won all the other matches.
Shirley Swafford, Emaelee Nelson and Lydia Teeter picked up wins for Kennett in the junior varsity singles contests.
Kennett traveled to Charleston Wednesday before today’s home opener versus Jackson at the Janet Hilburn Pavilion.
In other Kennett sports on Tuesday, the newly formed soccer team traveled to Jackson for a junior varsity level match.
Jackson defeated Kennett, 7-0, but the hometown Indians made those red-hued Indians play the full 80 minutes.
