DEXTER, Mo. — Ross Peters led the charge and generated a standout performance, sparking Kelly to a decisive 4-0 win at Dexter on Tuesday, May 9.
Peters' impressive play was complemented by the Hawks’ (19-8) error-free defense, while the Bearcats (10-14) struggled with errors throughout the game.
“Ross Peters was electric,” said Kelly coach Josh Hopkins. “We were just good enough offensively to force some mistakes and get some runs to give our pitchers some cushion.”
Peters earned the win after throwing five innings. He didn’t allow any runs on only one hit with nine strikeouts and four walks.
Nicholas Christian notched the save after pitching the final two innings. He also allowed no runs on just one hit and had five strikeouts.
The win snapped a two-game losing streak, both coming against state-ranked opponents, for Kelly.
The Hawks gained a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after Drew Klipfel scored on an error, and extended their advantage to 4-0 in the fifth inning after Jett Hull scored on a fielder’s choice, Colton Essner scored on an error and Reece Eftink singled to score Peters.
Kelly received the top seed in the MSHSAA Class 3, District 2 Tournament at Hillhouse Park in Charleston, Mo.
The Hawks will host the winner of fourth-seeded East Prairie (16-12) and fifth-seeded Charleston(10-12) on Tuesday, May 16.
